Universiti Teknologi Brunei is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to join as a part-time Research Assistant for a temporary position in the research project titled “Gamification in Education: Enhancing Students’ Learning Experience in STEM Subjects”. 

Employment Period

From September 10, 2025, to October 14, 2025.

Qualification and/or skills requirement: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in creative multimedia or any other closely related field. 
  • The primary responsibility of the Research Assistant will be to focus on the design and programming of game-based learning for the proposed research solution. 
  • The appointee should have proficient experience in one of the following fields: (1) 3D modeling, animation, and rendering with Blender, or (2) game development and programming with Unity3D. 

Applicant should possess the following:  

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written English.   
  • A positive attitude and flexibility in working hours.  
  • Mentoring skills, a team player, and able to work independently. 
  • Possess good organizational skills and effective time management.

o At least a credit or equivalent in English Language GCE O-level or an IELTS score of 6.0 or a TOEFL minimum overall score of 550 or its equivalent. The English Language requirements may be waived where qualifying studies in Higher Education were in the medium of English Language.

  • Good work ethic, effective time management, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Knowledge in “process system modelling” and energy generation technologies is an added advantage.
  • Familiar with modelling software, such as GAMS, LINGO, P-Graph, is an added advantage.
  • Good communication skills, in both oral and written English.
  • Good report writing.
  • Ability to interpret data.

Job descriptions: 

The Research Assistant will support the Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Investigators in conducting research activities related to the development of self-healing soil systems using Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) and Rice Husk Ash (RHA) for improving dessication cracking resistance of expansive clay soils. The Research Assistant is expected to perform assigned research tasks, including laboratory investigations, data analysis, documentation, and preparation of research outputs. The key responsibilities include:  

 

  • Assist in literature review on expansive clay soils, desiccation cracking, MICP-based soil improvement, and sustainable utilisation of RHA in geotechnical engineering. 
  • Conduct soil sampling, sample preparation, and characterisation, including specific gravity, Atterberg limits, particle size distribution, compaction tests, and other relevant geotechnical tests. 
  • Assist in the preparation and processing of Rice Husk Ash (RHA), bacterial cultures, and MICP cementation solutions for soil treatment. 
  • Prepare treated clay specimens with different RHA contents and MICP treatment conditions for laboratory investigation 
  • Conduct laboratory experiments, including desiccation cracking tests, digital image monitoring, and crack analysis using ImageJ/Fiji software. 
  • Assist in microstructural analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to evaluate calcite precipitation, particle bonding, and soil–RHA–MICP interaction mechanisms. 
  • Analyse experimental data and assist in interpreting results related to crack suppression, soil improvement performance, and treatment effectiveness. 
  • Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures, laboratory results, observations, and research progress through laboratory notebooks and electronic databases. 
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, research manuscripts, presentations, and other research outputs, and perform any other research-related tasks assigned by the PI or Co-Investigators.

Background:

The Civil Engineering programme area, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to join a temporary position as Research Assistant to provide technical support to a research project titled ‘Evaluation of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Readiness in Brunei Darussalam: Integrating Behavioural Analysis, Waste Characterisation, and Life Cycle Assessment’.

 

Brunei’s primary landfill, Sg. Paku landfill site, will reach capacity in a few years; prompting incineration as a potential municipal solid waste (MSW) management alternative. However, the environmental and operational performance of incineration depends critically on waste characteristics and separation behaviour. Currently, there is no integrated technical and environmental assessment of the suitability of Brunei’s MSW for incineration.

 

This project proposes a data-driven incineration readiness assessment integrating MSW characterisation, life cycle assessment, and behaviour analysis. A few scenarios will be evaluated. Using Brunei-specific data, the project will identify interventions to improve environmental performance; informing national waste infrastructure planning.

 

Job Descriptions:

Research Assistant (RA) should carry out works pertaining to the project as assigned by the Principal Investigator(s) or Co-Investigator(s). This includes but may not be limited to the following:

  • Manage and regularly update the progress of the project;
  • Assist in the researching the digital content for the project;
  • Waste Composition Analysis. Manual sorting and weighing of categories relevant to incineration quality;
  • Household Behaviour Survey. Structured survey of households to assess sorting practices and barriers. Regression analysis to identify behavioural predictors;
  • Life Cycle Assessment using software such as OpenLCA or SimaPro.
  • Other activities relevant to the research;
  • Contribute to scientific publications.

Other Expectations:

  • Research Assistant (RA) should report to the Principal Investigator(s) of the project;
  • RA should follow work schedule as prepared by the Principal Investigator(s).
  • To cover the entire project duration or employment period, the RA will work for a total of 56 working days subject to a maximum of 10 working days per month as agreed within the Principal Investigator(s).

Research Assistant: Digital Twin Project For Transport Infrastructure Management

Universiti Teknologi Brunei is seeking a Research Assistant to support a smart-infrastructure research project developing an adaptive, uncertainty-aware Digital Twin for Road-Network Monitoring and Maintenance Planning Support in Brunei Darussalam.

The Research Assistant will take a hands-on role in field data collection, road-condition image labelling, and coordination with the relevant government agencies.  This is a strong opportunity for a detail-oriented graduate with an interest in smart cities, digital twins, and applied data work.

Position details

Duration:  1 October 2026 to 31 April 2027 (7 months).

Commitment:  Approximately 6 working days per month.

Allowance:  Approximately $780 per month ($130 per verified working day).

Location:  Universiti Teknologi Brunei, with regular field surveys on Brunei road networks.

Reports to:  Project Principal Investigator and supervisory team.

 

What we are looking for

  • A graduate in electrical and electronic engineering, computer science, data science, GIS, or a related field.
  • Strong attention to detail and reliable, consistent record-keeping.
  • Willingness to carry out road-based field surveys; a valid driving licence is required.
  • Comfort working with images, spreadsheets and structured data.

Job Descriptions

  • Conduct GPS-tagged dashcam survey rounds along the three study road network, across the wet and dry seasons.
  • Perform manual road-distress annotation and assign an Estimated Pavement Condition Index (ePCI) to each road segment, following the project rubric.
  • Apply image rectification and pre-processing, and measure reference patches to support calibration.
  • Collect weekly traffic-exposure data (Google Maps travel-time) and weather records, aligned to the survey intervals.
  • Coordinate with the relevant government agencies.
  • Enter and organise segment-level data in the project database and carry out quality-control checks.
  • Contribute to literature review and documentation.
  • Assess, interpret and evaluate the outcomes of the research.
  • Assist with administrative tasks related to the project.

Person Specifications

Essential

  • First degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.

Job Descriptions:

The Research Assistant is expected to carry out the works pertaining to the project as assigned by the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigators, which include the following:

  • Create 2D engineering drawings, interpret engineering drawings and standards and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) for the study;
  • Develop an AI- Native 2D drafting application with core features;
  • Enable prompt-to-drawing capability to generate a draft drawing and a step-by-step construction plan that students can inspect and edit;
