> Faculty of Engineering

The UTB Faculty of Engineering is the foremost provider of engineering higher education in Brunei Darussalam, having had experience delivering internationally-benchmarked engineering programmes at various levels since 1986.

The Faculty of Engineering consists of four programme areas:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Petroleum and Chemical Engineering

The Faculty offers Bachelor of Engineering programmes in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering, which are four years in duration on full-time basis. This is in addition to coursework Master’s degree programmes in Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Water Resources and Environmental Engineering.

All taught programmes in the Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Programme Areas are currently accredited by professional institutions under the UK Engineering Council.

Our undergraduate programmes typically include a period of industrial placement between the third and fourth year, which aims to provide a platform for the students to gain valuable workplace experience under the guidance of an industry mentor. This placement equips the students not just with valuable knowledge of industrial practice, but also professionalism and other soft skills required to become capable, productive and therefore highly-employable graduates.

Our holistic and comprehensive curricula are developed in consultation with employers in industry and other stakeholders, to produce well-rounded graduates who are capable of developing effective solutions to real engineering problems and adaptable to meet the expectations and needs of Brunei Darussalam and beyond. The taught programmes in the Faculty of Engineering are designed to achieve accreditation by professional institutions under the UK Engineering Council.

Hence, all our programmes seek to develop graduates who will be able to:

  • acquire the skills to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems in their discipline
  • analyse, design and develop complex engineering systems in their engineering discipline, considering constraints, risks and uncertainties
  • ensure that their work conforms to the social, economic, ethical and environmental context, including respecting the principles of Melayu Islam Beraja
  • communicate professionally, and work effectively in teams and in leadership roles
  • progress successfully into further learning, research and development, with an ethos of lifelong learning.

The Faculty also offers research Master and PhD degree programmes, which draw upon the range of engineering expertise availed by our international and local faculty staff, and enhanced by our international research networks. Students undertaking these programmes will have the opportunity to work at the forefront of engineering knowledge, and contribute to the solution of challenging problems faced by industry and researchers around the world. This provides excellent training in self-discipline and intellectual capacity, and graduates will develop the confidence and ability to take on challenging technical problems in industry or in academia.

The Faculty of Engineering has longstanding and extensive links with industry organisations in Brunei Darussalam, enabling research and consultancy services which continually contribute substantially towards helping solve real problems faced by industry and government bodies. Undergraduate students benefit greatly from these industrial linkages, as industrial placements and opportunities to work on real-world industry problems provide our students with a unique perspective and experience which better prepare them to be productive employees for industry.

By continuing to work towards local and international recognition of our engineering graduates, the Faculty of Engineering contributes towards the realisation of UTB’s vision to become a global university with meaningful and positive impacts on society.
