New Alternative Mode of Learning

Introduction

  • UTB has expanded and developed its delivery method of teaching and learning further by introducing virtual/online education as an alternative delivery mode to expand access and strengthen excellence in teaching and learning.
  • UTB is proud to introduce hybrid and remote learning modes which will facilitate research and learning environment for research students (Master by Research and PhD) especially to those who are unable to be physically present in the university on a regular basis due to many reasons.
  • Hybrid and remote learning provide more time and flexibility to individuals who wish to pursue graduate research qualifications.
  • The aim is to promote flexibility to learners and expand research globally to achieve quality education and research without compromising with the resources.
  • The objective is to offer research degree programmes through technology with flexibility, and opportunity to allow all research students to excel.

Hybrid Learning

Hybrid learning is for research that is predominantly laboratory based which is typical of Engineering/Science nature and for research students residing in Brunei

  • Laboratories are accessed only at certain time of the year during the candidature period while the rest of the research work can be computer-based and carried out away from the University.
  • Students are expected to spend at least 20% and up to 50% of their candidature period in the university physically for laboratory works or specialised analysis.
  • Students are expected to make research plan within the first 6 months of enrollment with their supervisory team on the laboratory schedule and duration to be spent on the university campus.
  • Consultation with the supervisor is face to face when the students are on campus and online when the students are not in residence in Brunei.

Remote Learning

Remote learning is for research students who are not residing in Brunei but wish to conduct their research without requiring access to UTB’s facilities and laboratories during their candidature period.

  • Suitable for Computer Science/Business Management/Centre for Teaching and Learning students that require them to conduct field studies
  • Also suitable for Engineering/Science students that conduct pure simulation works or those who have laboratory access elsewhere such as their workplaces.
  • Students are not expected/required to be present in the university campus.
  • Consultation and discussion with the supervisory teams are all online.

The candidature period for students pursuing hybrid and remote graduate research is similar to the current full-time and part-time students.
