Vacancy: Research Assistant (2 Positions) 

Universiti Teknologi Brunei is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to join as a part-time Research Assistant for a temporary position in the research project titled “Gamification in Education: Enhancing Students’ Learning Experience in STEM Subjects”. 

Employment Period 

: 

From September 10, 2025, to October 14, 2025. 

Principal Investigator

Salary rate 

: 

BND 130 per day (25 working days distributed throughout the employment period) 

 

Qualification and/or skills requirement: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in creative multimedia or any other closely related field. 
  • The primary responsibility of the Research Assistant will be to focus on the design and programming of game-based learning for the proposed research solution. 
  • The appointee should have proficient experience in one of the following fields: (1) 3D modeling, animation, and rendering with Blender, or (2) game development and programming with Unity3D. 

Applicant should possess the following:  

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written English.   
  • A positive attitude and flexibility in working hours.  
  • Mentoring skills, a team player, and able to work independently. 
  • Possess good organizational skills and effective time management. 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). 
  • The appointee will contribute to developing a game-based prototype for the proposed solution within the research.

Vacancy: Research Assition Position (1 Position) 

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individuals to join as Research Assistant for a Research Project entitled Process Improvements to Generic High-Value Chemical Intermediates Using Raw Materials from Brunei and Flow Reactors”. 

Employment Period 

1 Dec 2025 - 30 Nov 2027

Prof Dr. Sivakumar Manickam 

Salary rate 

B$1,800.00 per month (including the employer’s contribution of 9.5% monthly) 

 

Research Assistant: 

  • Educational background:  
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, or Chemistry. Industrial experience is an advantage but not essential. 
  • Technical expertise: 
  • Strong foundation in chemical reaction engineering and process design. 
  • Knowledge of organic and industrial chemistry, particularly with organic intermediates. 
  • Experience or willingness to work with flow chemistry, microreactors, or continuous processing systems. 
  • Familiarity with safety practices for handling exothermic and spontaneous reactions. 
  • Basic skills in analytical characterization techniques (GC, HPLC, FTIR, NMR, etc.). 
  • Knowledge of process simulation tools is desirable. 
  • Research and Innovation: 
  • Interest in developing value-added chemicals from Brunei’s feedstocks (benzene, toluene, ammonia, urea, methanol). 
  • Ability to design and optimize experiments for process intensification. 
  • Experience in preparing scientific reports or conference papers. 
  • Professional attributes: 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, in English. 
  • Good problem-solving and critical thinking skills. 
  • Effective time management, strong work ethic, and ability to work both independently and in a team. 
  • Commitment to research ethics, laboratory safety, and professional integrity.

  • Additional preferred skills (optional but advantageous): 
  • Prior exposure to process scale-up. 
  • Basic programming or data analysis skills. 
  • Awareness of sustainability and green chemistry principles. 

 

Job Descriptions: 

  1. The Research Assistant (RA) shall follow the work schedule prepared by the Principal Investigator (PI). 
  1. The RA is required to maintain a daily journal, with attendance verified by the Project Team Leader. 
  1. The RA shall carry out project-related tasks assigned by the PI or Co-Investigator. These may include, but are not limited to, research, documentation, data analysis, and other project-specific responsibilities. 

Working Hours: 

  • The RA shall work 7.5 hours per day, following regular Government office hours: 
  • Monday–Thursday, Saturday: 7:45 am – 12:15 pm; 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm 
  • Or as otherwise agreed by the PI. 
  • Public holidays shall not be considered working days.

B$ 130.00 per day (maximum of 8 working days per month with SPK contribution rate of 10.5% per month) 

 

Job Descriptions: 

RA should carry out the works pertaining to the project as assigned by the Principal Investigator(s) or Co-Investigator(s), and they may include but not limited to the following: 

  • Manage and regularly update the progress of the project; 
  • Assist in the researching the digital content for the project; 
  • Assist in preparing digital presentation of the project; 
  • Assist in deploying and retraction of the solution to and off the site; 
  • Assist in the various stages (pre, actual and post) deployment of the solution; 
  • Other duties relevant to the project or activities of the research centre when required; 

 

Other Expectations: 

 

  • Research Assistants should report to the PI of the project. 
  •  Research Assistants should follow the agreed work schedule and if required it may be updated with the consent of the PI. 
  • Research Assistants is required to work 7 ½ hours per day, following regular 
  • Government office hours (Monday – Thursday, Saturday 7.45am – 12.15pm; 1.30 – 4.30pm) OR as agreed with the PI. 
  •  Public holidays will not be used as working days. 
  • Research Assistants will work for a maximum of 8 days per month. 
  • Research Assistants are required to keep a daily log book and attendance is to be verified by the PI for purpose of calculations of allowance/payment.   

 

 

Qualification and/or skills requirement: 

 

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer and Network Security or any other closely related fields. 
  • The appointee should have a solid background in aquaculture related projects. 
  • The appointee should have a solid background in computer programming.  
  • The appointee should have good grasp of wiring and power usage.

  • Interested in doing research with the proven ability to conduct research independently 
  • A positive attitude and flexibility in working hours
