Universiti Teknologi Brunei is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to join as a part-time Research Assistant for a temporary position in the research project titled “Gamification in Education: Enhancing Students’ Learning Experience in STEM Subjects”. 

Employment Period

Qualification and/or skills requirement: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in creative multimedia or any other closely related field. 
  • The primary responsibility of the Research Assistant will be to focus on the design and programming of game-based learning for the proposed research solution. 
  • The appointee should have proficient experience in one of the following fields: (1) 3D modeling, animation, and rendering with Blender, or (2) game development and programming with Unity3D.

Job Descriptions: 

RA should carry out the works pertaining to the project as assigned by the Principal Investigator(s) or Co-Investigator(s), and they may include but not limited to the following: 

  • Manage and regularly update the progress of the project; 
  • Assist in the researching the digital content for the project; 
  • Assist in preparing digital presentation of the project; 
  • Assist in deploying and retraction of the solution to and off the site; 
  • Assist in the various stages (pre, actual and post) deployment of the solution; 
  • Other duties relevant to the project or activities of the research centre when required;

  • The appointee should have a solid background in aquaculture related projects. 
  • The appointee should have a solid background in computer programming.  
  • The appointee should have good grasp of wiring and power usage.

Job descriptions:

The Research Assistant is expected to carry out the works pertaining to the project as assigned by the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigators, which include the following:

  • Assist in the planning, design, and execution of experiments related anaerobic digestion
  • Conduct experiments with laboratory-scale bioreactors, optimising key parameters and measuring gas production and composition.
  • Handle laboratory equipment, sample preparation, maintenance of the bioreactors.
  • Document experimental procedures, results, and observations meticulously.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, research papers, and presentations based on experimental findings 

Other Expectations:

  • The Research Assistant should report to the PI of the project.
  • The Research Assistant should follow the agreed work schedule and if required it may be updated with the consent of the PI.
  • The Research Assistant i s required to work 7 1⁄2 hours per day, for a total of 60 working days over the project period (approximately 1 year), with flexible scheduling as mutually agreed upon with the PI.
  • Public holidays will not be used as working days.
  • The Research Assistant will work for a maximum of 6 days per month.
  • The Research Assistant (Graduate) is required to keep a daily logbook and attendance is to be verified by the PI for purpose of calculations of allowance/payment.

 

Qualification and/or skills requirement:

  • The following qualifications will be needed:
  • At least a second-class honours Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent in BEng (Hons) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Biotechnology or any other closely related fields recognised by the National Accreditation Council of Brunei Darussalam.
  • At least a credit or equivalent in English Language GCE O-level or an IELTS score of 6.0 or a TOEFL minimum overall score of 550 or its equivalent. The English Language requirements may be waived where qualifying studies in Higher Education were in the medium of English Language.
  • Have experience in data collection processing and analysing of data. 
  • Strong interest in renewable energy, biogas, or environmental sustainability.
  • Experience with laboratory work or anaerobic digestion is an advantage.
  • Strong communication skills, in both oral and written English. 
  • Comfortable working in a laboratory environment and capable of independently running experiments.
  • Interested in doing research with the proven ability to conduct research independently, writing research articles and reports. 
  • Strong attention to detail, organisational skills, and ability to troubleshoot.

Job Descriptions:

RA should carry out the works pertaining to the project as assigned by the Principal Investigator(s) or Co-Investigator(s), and they may include but not limited to the following:

·       Manage and regularly update the progress of the project;

·       Assist in the researching the digital content for the project;

·       Assist in preparing digital presentation of the project;

·       Design and develop an online database system to verify the UTB academic certificate

·       Design and develop a blockchain-based digital academic certificate and validate it using any API using smart contracts.

·       Test and deploy the solution using the UTB UG students’ data (anonymous data) at UTB;

·       Other duties relevant to the project or activities of the research centre when required;

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical/ Mechanical/Civil Engineering or any other related field.
  • The appointee should have a background in waste-water treatment and an understanding of the adsorption process.
  • Analysing and interpreting data, preparing research reports and publications.
  • Able to collect samples from Waste Dumping Yards regularly and conduct experiments in the lab.
  • Conducting a literature review on the removal of pollutants such as heavy metals.

Job Descriptions

  • Conduct literature reviews to gather relevant articles, books, and other sources related to the research topic – Transport Mobility-Accessibility. This helps the researchers stay updated on the existing knowledge and identify gaps in the literature.
  • Facilitate in sampling strategy, design questionnaire survey and interviews.
  • Research assistants assist in performing statistical analyses using software such as Excel or SPSS. This might involve running descriptive statistics, correlations, regression analyses etc.
  • Creating graphs, charts, and visual representations of data is an important aspect of quantitative research. Research assistants can assist in generating these visuals to help communicate findings effectively.
  • Research assistant contributes to the data collection interview-analysis process by coding qualitative data. This involves identifying themes, patterns, and concepts within the data.
  • Research assistant should be aware of ethical guidelines related to data privacy, informed consent, and human subjects' protection, especially when dealing with sensitive or personal data.
  • Research assistant contribute to the writing of research reports, articles, and presentations. He/she might help with the draft of report/articles, and in some cases, co-authorship on publications might be possible.
  • Effective communication and teamwork are essential as research assistants collaborate closely with lead researchers, to ensure the smooth progress of the research project.
  • Research assistant should be adaptable to changing project requirements and be open to learning new skills as the research progresses.

 

Person Specifications

Essential

  • Postgraduate degree in relevant subject of the research topic preferably in transport mobility-accessibility study.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to communicate complex and conceptual ideas to a range of groups.
  • Evidence of the ability to collaborate actively within the University and externally to complete research projects and advance thinking.
  • Able to balance the pressures of research, administrative demands and competing deadlines.
