Vacancy: Research Assistant (1 position) 

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individuals to join a temporary position as a part-time Research Assistant for a research project entitled “Remediation of Heavy Metals in Leachate and Toxic Spills from Waste Dumping Yards in Brunei Darussalam Using Functionalised Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes”. 

Employment Period 

August 2025 - June 2026 

Principal Investigator 

Dr. Rama Rao Karri  

Salary Rate 

BND 130 per day (Maximum of 46 days distributed across the employment period with maximum working days of 5 days per month, including SPK contribution rate of 10.5% per month) 

 

Qualification and skills requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical/ Mechanical/Civil Engineering or any other related field. 
  • The appointee should have a background in waste-water treatment and an understanding of the adsorption process. 
  • Analysing and interpreting data, preparing research reports and publications. 
  • Able to collect samples from Waste Dumping Yards regularly and conduct experiments in the lab. 
  • Conducting a literature review on the removal of pollutants such as heavy metals. 

 

Applicants should possess the following: 

  • Good communication skills, in both oral and written English. 
  • Good work ethic, effective time management, and able to work independently. 
  • Experience writing scientific reports or conference papers. 
  • A positive attitude and flexibility in working hours. 

 

Job Descriptions: 

  1. The research Assistant (RA) should follow the work schedule as prepared by the Principal Investigator. 
  2. The RA is required to keep a daily journal, and attendance is to be verified by the Project Team Leader. 
  3. RA should carry out the works about the project as assigned by the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator, and they may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

 

Working Hours: 

 The RA shall work 7 ½ hours per day, following regular Government office hours (Monday – Thursday, Saturday 7.45 am – 12.15 pm; 1.30 – 4.30 pm) or as agreed by the Principal Investigator. Public holidays will not be used as working days.

Qualification and skills requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical/ Mechanical/Civil Engineering or any other related field. 
  • The appointee should have a background in either Energy/Water-related research (preference to applicants who have expertise in both fields)

  • Acquire reliable data to compute water‐energy cost savings in Brunei.

  • The appointee should have a background in either Food/Water-related research (preference to applicants who have expertise in both fields) 
  • Analysing and interpreting data, preparing research reports and publications. 
  • Acquire reliable data to understand water‐energy cost savings and their dependence on Food security in Brunei. 
  • Conduct a survey with local farmers and supermarkets in Brunei.

Principal Investigator (PI)

Employment Period 

01/10/2025 to 30/09/2026 

Salary rate 

B$130 per day (60 working days distributed throughout the employment period with the maximum of 5 working days per month, including SPK contribution rate of 10.5% per month) 

 

Job descriptions: 

The Research Assistant is expected to carry out the works pertaining to the project as assigned by the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigators, which include the following: 

 

  • Assist in the planning, design, and execution of experiments related anaerobic digestion 
  • Conduct experiments with laboratory-scale bioreactors, optimising key parameters and measuring gas production and composition. 
  • Handle laboratory equipment, sample preparation, maintenance of the bioreactors. 
  • Document experimental procedures, results, and observations meticulously. 
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, research papers, and presentations based on experimental findings  

 

Other Expectations: 

  • The Research Assistant should report to the PI of the project. 
  • The Research Assistant should follow the agreed work schedule and if required it may be updated with the consent of the PI. 
  • The Research Assistant i s required to work 7 1⁄2 hours per day, for a total of 60 working days over the project period (approximately 1 year), with flexible scheduling as mutually agreed upon with the PI. 
  • Public holidays will not be used as working days. 
  • The Research Assistant will work for a maximum of 5 days per month. 
  • The Research Assistant (Graduate) is required to keep a daily logbook and attendance is to be verified by the PI for purpose of calculations of allowance/payment. 

 

 

Qualification and/or skills requirement: 

  • The following qualifications will be needed: 
  • At least a second-class honours Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent in BEng (Hons) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Biotechnology or any other closely related fields recognised by the National Accreditation Council of Brunei Darussalam. 
  • At least a credit or equivalent in English Language GCE O-level or an IELTS score of 6.0 or a TOEFL minimum overall score of 550 or its equivalent. The English Language requirements may be waived where qualifying studies in Higher Education were in the medium of English Language. 
  • Have experience in data collection processing and analysing of data.  
  • Strong interest in renewable energy, biogas, or environmental sustainability. 
  • Experience with laboratory work or anaerobic digestion is an advantage.

  • Comfortable working in a laboratory environment and capable of independently running experiments.

  • Collect data to determine relevant parameters (e.g. slope geometry, loading, soil parameters and rainfall) for the study. 
  • Use GeoStudio (Seep/w and Slope/w) to evaluate the behaviour of selected slope configuration under selected rainfall. 
  • Compare results from the modelling with existing records and case studies.  
  • Other duties relevant to the project or activities of research assigned by the Principal Investigator.
