The establishment of Centre for Research on Agri-Food Science and Technology (CrAFT) was announced by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam during UTB’s sixth convocation in 2019. This initiative is a key part of ongoing nationwide efforts to support Brunei's agriculture and food industries (SDG 2). It complements the university’s existing Food Science and Agrotechnology programmes by providing a dedicated research centre (SDG 4).

In His Majesty’s titah:

“I hope that CrAFT will work with various government agencies, private sector, and higher learning institutions locally and internationally,”

Inspired by His Majesty’s vision for collaboration and progress, CrAFT is dedicated to advancing scientific research and innovation. We aim to drive economic development and national growth by fostering partnerships and producing impactful research that contributes to Brunei’s food security and a sustainable future.

Vision

To be a leading centre in agrifood research focused on sustainable food systems for both local and global communities (SDG 2).

Mission

To drive impactful open research and innovation in agrifood science and technology that supports national food security, sustainability, economic growth, and talent development in alignment with Wawasan Brunei 2035 (SDG 2, 4, 8, 12, 13 and 17).

Message from the Director

Welcome to the Centre for Research on Agri-Food Science and Technology (CrAFT).

CrAFT was established with a simple but important goal: to support the development of agriculture and food systems that are more efficient, resilient, and responsive to local needs. We focus on practical research and collaborative efforts that can make a meaningful difference—whether it's improving farming practices, supporting smallholders, or exploring digital tools that help communities manage resources better.

We work closely with partners across disciplines and sectors to ensure our work is relevant and applicable. From field trials to data-driven insights, our aim is to contribute to solutions that are grounded in reality and shaped by the people who use them.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is a key part of our approach. We understand that long-term progress in agriculture depends on how well we care for our land, water, and ecosystems. At CrAFT, we promote practices that help reduce waste, improve soil health, and make better use of natural resources. Our research supports farmers and food producers in adopting methods that are both economically viable and environmentally responsible.

We welcome collaboration with researchers, practitioners, and communities who share our interest in practical, sustainable solutions. Thank you for visiting CrAFT, and we look forward to working together to support a more secure and sustainable food future.
