UTB Food Waste Summary 2024: Supporting SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) & SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)

> UTB Food Waste Summary 2024: Supporting SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) & SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)

In 2024, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) generated a total of approximately 3.54 tonnes of food waste from its two cafeteria vendors. This figure represents the yearly amount of food waste, based on daily measurements taken by vendors.

Food waste was measured directly by vendors using digital scales and compiled by the Planning Development Office (PDO).

Overall wastage remained very low throughout the year, reflecting UTB’s strong culture of responsible consumption.

  • Students commonly request smaller portions and bring home leftovers, helping to minimise waste.
  • The lowest levels of wastage were recorded between May and July, during the semester break when most students were away from campus.
  • Additionally, the cafeteria is closed every Friday and Sunday, further reducing overall waste generation.

UTB continues to promote sustainable dining practices through portion control, reusable containers, and awareness campaigns supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
