UTB Ranking and Rating Project

The PDO is given the responsibility to lead and manage the UTB ranking and rating project in July 2014. The objectives of UTB ranking and Rating Project are to include UTB in QS University Ranking by 2018 and to benchmark UTB against other Universities in the World

UTB QS Star Rating Project

UTB has continued to achieve the QS Star highest rating of 5 Star Plus in 2021. 15 universities are awa  rded this highest rating and only two of them are universities from Asia namely City University of Hong Kong and Universiti Teknologi Brunei making UTB the only university in South East Asia being awarded QS 5 Star Plus Rating in 2021 from Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an international ranking body based in London. UTB had scored the maximum of 5 Star for all the categories, namely, Teaching, Employability, Research, Internationalisation, Facilities, Social Responsibility, Inclusiveness and Specialist Criteria: on Program Strength.  The Specialist Criteria highlighted BEng in Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering to be a dominant specialization with domestic and international accreditations in this field.

QS Star project started in July 2017 where PDO has submitted UTB’s institutional data. Over 50 indicators were analysed. In Sept 2017, UTB became the first university in Brunei Darussalam to be awarded with QS 4 Star rating.

Nine months later, QS invited UTB to submit 12 additional data for the new program strength category introduced by QS in Aug 2017. In Aug 2018, QS upgraded UTB to QS 5 Star making UTB, the first and only five stars rated University in Brunei Darussalam.

In July 2021, UTB submitted new institutional data consisting of 85 different indicators for re-evaluation of all the existing categories plus a new additional Academic Development Categories. In August 2021, UTB is awarded with 5 Star Plus rating putting UTB alongside with some of the very top universities in the world such as University of Glasgow, Scotland, Newcastle University, England, University of Wollongong and Curtin University, Australia, and University of Otago, New Zealand.

Previous universities who have achieved a 5 Star Plus is Nanyang Technology University, Singapore (2014), University of Queensland (2012) and University of New South Wales (2019), Australia.

UTB QS Ranking Project

UTB achieved its vision in October 2017 when UTB was included in the QS Asia University Ranking 2018 at #165, based on the data submitted in February 2017. This is a significant milestone for UTB nine years after being upgraded to a university status. UTB stands at position #9 amongst universities specialising or offering Engineering and Technology programs in Southeast Asia (SEA), featured in QSAUR. UTB also stands at #40 amongst Engineering and Technology Universities in Asia and #3 in Southeast Asia.

In June 2018, UTB enters QS World University Ranking 2019 for the first time at #465, 8 months after being included in QSAUR. This makes UTB the fastest and youngest university in South East Asia to be ranked in QS World Ranking.

Since making its debut entry in QS Ranking, UTB has been making good progress except in 2018, UTB dropped in sixteen places in QS Asia Ranking due to the change in evaluation metrics introduced by QS.

In 2019, UTB has climbed 63 places taking the spot at #370 in QS World Ranking 2020. Last year, UTB is at #350. Currently, UTB stands at #344 in QSWUR 2022.

UTB also ranks in QS Top 50 under 50 young University Ranking at #40 and for the very first time, UTB enters QS subject ranking for Petroleum Engineering.
