Alhamdulillah, 2022 has indeed witnessed back-to-normal activities of the university where we continue to operate amid widespread of COVID-19 infection. UTB has always been mindful of COVID-19 and is still exercising SOP as and when necessary. Moving into 2023, the outlook is better, and the incidence of COVID-19 infection has shown a decline in the country.
Please allow me to introduce Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB in short) first, UTB is an Engineering and Technological University in Negara Brunei Darussalam. It was first established in 1986 as an Institut Teknologi Brunei and upgraded to a university status in 2008 before it changes its name to the present one in 2016. We are a small university under 50 years of age, with about 1,795 students, 144 academic staff and 121 support staff. (265 staff in total)]. UTB has six academic Faculty, Schools and Centre in Engineering, Business, Computing and Informatics, Applied Sciences and Mathematics, Design, Communication, Teaching and Learning, and three research centres in transport, innovative engineering and Agri-food science and technology.
Our Mission is to nurture socially responsible talents committed to building a global and entrepreneurial society in pursuit of innovation and industry-relevant capabilities which support Brunei’s Vision 2035. UTB aspires to fulfill its vision by being “A Global University Impacting Society”.
Alhamdulillah, I am pleased to say that UTB has indeed made a great progress over the years and continues to rise in the global rankings. Today, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) is ranked at 340th place in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2023 (QSWUR), ranked 136th in the QS Asia University Rankings 2023 (QSAUR). It has also ranked UTB 27th in the QS Asia University Rankings 2023 for South-Eastern Asia universities. UTB was also among the top 18% of universities in the QSAUR. In 2021, UTB was the only university in Southeast Asia to receive the prestigious QS 5-Star Plus rating for an outstanding university. Our Petroleum Engineering programme is also in the top 101-150 of the QSWUR Subject Ranking. This recognition acknowledges our research excellence, teaching quality, globalization experience for students and capacity for nurturing student talent.
In 2022, UTB introduced the Postgraduate Micro-credentials program which gives professionals and graduates the opportunity to upskill and reskill in their chosen discipline to meet their career and personal development needs. This program can eventually provide the opportunity to obtain a Level 7 qualification. In addition, UTB has successfully obtained accreditations from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for the Mechanical Engineering programme areas and from the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), United Kingdom and for the Civil Engineering programme area. With this accreditation, the programs offered by UTB are considered equivalent to the programme that is also offered in ranking universities abroad.
This year, UTB will be offering 2 new and 1 rebranded undergraduate programmes namely, Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Food Science and Human Nutrition, Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Digital Media (Major in Digital Content Design/ Game Development) and Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Energy Engineering. UTB will also be offering 2 new postgraduate programmes namely, Master of Science (By Coursework) in Food Science and Technology and Masters in Architecture.
These initiatives are aligned with UTB's efforts to ensure that quality education and provide equal opportunities as well as committed to its lifelong learning initiatives. To our prospective students, I hope you will choose UTB as it is definitely the BEST university to embark on your academic journey that will define your future career.
Lastly, I would like to emphasise that producing marketable graduates is still the most important agenda of our university. Our curriculum has to remain dynamic, strategic and at par with the world’s best practices in order to meet the demands of the global job market. While at UTB, they will be able to develop a range of attributes and skills for life and work. Insya’Allah, our graduates will become an integral part of our nation’s growth and development.
