UTB Food Waste Summary 2024-2025: Supporting SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) & SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)

> UTB Food Waste Summary 2024: Supporting SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) & SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) continues to monitor food waste from its campus cafeterias as part of its commitment to responsible consumption, sustainable campus operations and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

In 2025, UTB recorded 2.904 tonnes of food waste from its two cafeteria vendors, compared with 3.540 tonnes in 2024. This represents a reduction of 0.636 tonnes (636 kg), or 18.0% year on year. On an average-week basis, food waste decreased from approximately 68.1 kg per week in 2024 to 55.8 kg per week in 2025.

The figures are based on food-waste measurements recorded by cafeteria vendors using digital scales and compiled for campus monitoring.

The reduction is consistent with UTB's continuing efforts to prevent avoidable food waste through responsible dining messages, portion control, taking only what can be consumed, taking leftovers home where appropriate, and using reusable containers. Designated food-waste bins and continuing awareness efforts also support proper separation and monitoring of food waste.

Food-waste volumes can also be influenced by variations in campus occupancy, semester breaks, cafeteria operating days and vendor operations. The 18.0% reduction in food waste reflects the positive outcome of UTB’s ongoing food-waste prevention, awareness and monitoring measures. The reported reduction may also be influenced by changes in campus activity levels and cafeteria operations.

Through this programme, UTB contributes to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by promoting responsible food use and reducing avoidable food loss, and to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by strengthening waste prevention, monitoring and sustainable consumption practices.
