Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) secured several prestigious awards at the Brunei Info-Communication Technology Awards (BICTA) 2024, held at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas.

Presenting the awards to the winners was His Royal Highness Prince (Dr.) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, as the Royal Patron of BICTA.

UTB achieved accolades in multiple categories: Winner and First Runner-up in the Tertiary Category, Winner in the Research and Development Category; and Merit in the Technology Category.

In the Tertiary Category, the Winner went to "BirthPro VR: Low-risk Birth VR Simulation" by Mohammad Abdul Muiz Bin Haji Sahminan, BSc (Hons) in Digital Media. This innovative system offers medical students and professionals a virtual reality platform for practicing low-risk birth delivery training course with integration of virtual reality technology, diverging from the traditional approach.

The Merit award in the Tertiary Category, was awarded to the Sustainable Smart Water Management System At Home Using loT, by Muhamad Amirun Irfan bin Hasan, BSc (Hons) in Computer Networking. The product, a Sustainable Smart Water Management System At Home Using loT (SSWMSAHUl, is designed to monitor water usage, detect leaks, and automate water flow control in residential settings.

Its primary purpose is to conserve water, reduce costs, and enhance efficiency in water management. The target user for this system is the user or the household member themselves.

In the Research and Development Category Winner was awarded to the Empowering Rural and Urban Resilience: Holistic FloodTech by Siti Rasyidah binti Haji Ismail and Muhammad Daniel bin Haji Abdullah, both MSc by Research in Computer Network and Security under the company of Parraroute. The innovative approach not only reduces the incidence and impact of floods but an alternative to significantly enhance water quality in Brunei Darussalam through early detection to prevent disruptions in water quality that could affect human consumption, minimizing changes in colour and other indicators of contamination.

In the Technology Category, Alquatic Enterprise received the Merit Award by Dr Lim Tiong Hoo, Lecturer of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE); Dk Dr Nurun Najeebah Az-Zahra binti Pg DSP Hj Mohammad Tashim, Researcher under EEE; and Muhammad Wafiq bin Haji Zariful, Research Assistant under EEE. This is an advanced software that utilises the power of artificial intelligence to revolutionize the monitoring of prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) growth. It incorporates cutting-edge image capture technology and the deep learning algorithm YOLOv8 to accurately estimate prawn biomass. The Alquatic app bridges a crucial gap by providing a dual-functional feature that meets the demands of both farmers and consumers, resulting in a shared digital economy.

BICTA is an annual ICT competition co-organized by the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), the Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI), and InfoCom Federation Brunei (IFB). This year's theme, "Smart Country Through Digital Transformation," underscores the importance of innovation in achieving Brunei's Vision 2035.
