> UTB TRIUMPHS AT HUAWEI ICT COMPETITION 2023-2024 GLOBAL FINAL

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) has achieved a remarkable feat by securing the first-place victory in the Innovation track of the Huawei ICT Competition 2023-2024 Global Final, held in Shenzhen, China. Among a highly competitive field of over 170,000 students from more than 2,000 colleges and universities across 80 countries, UTB's Team CIE, supervised by Dr Wida Susanty binti Haji Suhaili and Dr Au Thein Wan, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Student, Alumni and Service), as their instructor, emerged triumphant with their innovative project, the “Peatland Forest Fire Monitoring Alert System.”

The prestigious competition, now in its eighth session, featured five tracks: Network, Computing, Cloud, Ascend, and Innovation. Team CIE’s project stood out from the initial selection of eight outstanding projects and ultimately shared the first prize with teams from China, Egypt, and Brazil.

The victorious team, consisting of Md Daniel Hj Abdullah, Siti Rasyidah Hj Ismail, and Md Musyaffa Abdul Aziz, all students pursuing Master of Science by Research, showcased exceptional innovation and dedication. Dr Mohamad Saiful bin Hj Omar, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (External and Industry Relations)was also present to witness this remarkable achievement.

The Peatland Forest Fire Monitoring Alert System integrates remote sensing devices with real-time data collection techniques to measure and monitor critical parameters such as water level, carbon emissions, soil temperature, soil humidity, and weather conditions. By leveraging IoT, machine learning, and cloud technology, the system provides early warnings of potential peat fire outbreaks or ecosystem degradation, enabling immediate action from stakeholders. The user-centric dashboard offers precision monitoring and data visualisation tools tailored to stakeholders' requirements, facilitating comprehensive understanding and informed decision-making regarding peatland conservation and management strategies. The collected data is stored in GeminiDB Influx and by using Huawei Cloud Solution, the data can be visualised via dashboard, ensuring accessibility for all stakeholders.

The outstanding achievement by UTB’s Team CIE showcases the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and technological excellence, positioning Brunei Darussalam as a leader in cutting-edge research and development.
