The Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Science, Technology and Engineering Connect (UTB-STE Connect 2023), organised by UTB, commenced today until 25 October 2023. The event is being held at various locations, including the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas; Rizqun International Hotel; and UTB campus.

With the theme ‘Research and Applications for a Better World’, the Congress comprises five conferences, namely the 9th Brunei International Conference on Engineering and Technology (BICET 2023), 6th International Conference on Applied Computational Intelligence in Information Systems (ACIIS 2023), 2nd International Conference on Business, Management and Information Systems (ICBMIS 2023), International Conference on Agrotechnology, Beverage, and Food (ICABF 2023), ATU-Net International Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Computing, Engineering, and Science Education (InvENT 2023).

BICET 2023, organised by the Faculty of Engineering (Feng), focused on ‘Engineering and Technologies for a Cleaner and Greener World’. The conference’s first day was held in Muzakarah Hall, Sepakat Rooms 2 and 3, ICC. It featured two keynote speakers, Professor Dr Masataka Kubo, Department of Chemistry for Materials, Faculty of Engineering Mie University, Japan entitled ‘Preparation of Cyclic Polymer and Its Application to Nonbonding Cross-Linking Agent for Polymer Network with Moveable Cross-Linking Points’ and Professor Dr Izharul Haq Farooqi, Department of Civil Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University, India. Three parallel sessions were held on the first day.

ACIIS 2023, a workshop organised by the School of Computing and Informatics (SCI) took place at the Lecture Theater 4, UTB. A total of thirty-six papers were presented.

ICBMIS 2023, organised by UTB School of Business (UTBSB), was held at Sepakat Room 5, ICC. The conference began with a keynote address by Professor Hun Tong Tan from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore entitled ‘Impact of Technology in Accounting Contexts’. This session was moderated by Yang Mulia Dr Fadzliwati binti Mohiddin, the Dean of UTBSB, followed by their first session on Accounting and Finance, which was chaired by Dr Ulaganathan Subramanian. The second keynote speaker, Dr Iman Harymawan, delved into the role of accounting in business resilience to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and was moderated by Dr Stephen James Singaraju. The second session, was chaired by Dr Hjh Farahiyah binti Hj Kawi. In total, there were twelve papers presented.

ICABF 2023 is organised by the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics (SASM), it was held in Sepakat Room 6 in ICC. It began with a plenary session by Professor Dr Yonathan Asikin, Faculty of Agriculture, University of the Ryukyus, 1 - Sembaru, Nishihara, Okinawa, Japan on ‘In-vivo Aroma Release and Flavour Characteristics and Non-centrifungal Cane Sugar’ and was followed by the first keynote address by Professor Dr Tan Chin-Ping, Faculty of Food Science and Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Selangor, Malaysia on ‘Preparation, Characterization, and Application of Micro-and-Nano[1]Structured Functional Lipids for Bioactive Food Ingredients’. The second keynote address was addressed by Professor Dr Utai Klinkesorn, Faculty of Agro-Industry, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand on ‘Valorization of Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) Kernel as Edible Fat Source: Extraction, Modification and Application in Foods. Two sessions of contributed talk followed. The first one with the theme ‘Food Product Innovation and PRESS RELEASE 23 October 2023 Development’ was chaired by Professor Dr Tan Chin-Ping. The second session was on the ‘Agricultural Engineering and Technology’ chaired by Professor Dr Utai Klinkesorn. Eleven papers were presented today.

The ATU-NET International Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Computing, Engineering and Science Education (ATU-Net InVENT), a first, organised by the Centre for Innovative Engineering (CIE), UTB in collaboration with Asia Technological University Network (ATU-Net) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). It was held at Sepakat 4 and Sejati 3, ICC. The conference commenced with welcoming remarks by Yang Mulia Dr Heru Susanto, Chairman, InvENT, UTB, and Yang Mulia Prof Ts Dr Haryani binti Haron, Chairman, InvENT, UiTM, followed by addressing remark by Yang Mulia Associate Professor Dr Mohd Ariffin Abu Hassan, ATU-Net Executive Director. A multimedia presentation and the exchange of mementos from ATU-Net to UTB and UiTM followed. The conference then started with the first keynote speaker, Professor. Ir. Ts. Dr. Sivarao Subramonian Professor, Innovative Design Engineering Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka with the title ‘University and Industries Synergy Through Pioneering Inventions’, moderated by Professor Kamariah Ismail, UTBSB. Two sessions followed and were moderated by Dr Junaid Anjum from UTB, and Associate Professor Ir Dr Amnorzahirah Amir from UiTM respectively. The second track was moderated by Dr Wendy Pei Ng Qing from UTB and Dr. Siti Noor Suzila Maqsood Ul-Haque, from UITM. This was followed by the second plenary speaker Prof Dr. Saad Hajj Bakry Professor, Computer Engineering, College of Computer and Information Sciences, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia on ‘Shifting Paradigm of Digital Transformation: Business Process Reengineering Society Resilience’. This proceeded with another two tracks. The first day of ATU-Net InVENT conference concluded with two workshops, “Customization of Implant System Through Additive Manufacturing Technology” facilitated by Associate Professor Ts Dr. Abdul Halim Abdullah and PRESS RELEASE 23 October 2023 Professor Ir Ts. Dr. Solehuddin Shuib, Universiti Teknologi Mara, and “Sentiment Analysis and Visualization of Social Media Data”, facilitated by Assoc. Prof. Ts Dr. Nur Atiqah Sia binti Abdullah, Universiti Teknologi Mara.

The congress also features other events, which include the 11th ATU-Net Board Meeting; 2nd UTB University Presidents’ Forum and UTB Women Leadership Forum.

UTB-STE Connect 2023 provides an excellent opportunity for intellectual discourse, knowledge sharing and networking to participants from around the world.
