> UTB HOLDS THE 5TH COMPUTATIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS (CIIS) 2022 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) hosted the 5th Computational Intelligence in Information Systems (CIIS 2022) International Conference organised by the School of Computing and Informatics (SCI). The virtual conference is held for three consecutive days from 17 to 19 October 2022. The opening ceremony was held today virtually via Zoom platform.

Present at the virtual ceremony as the Guest of Honour was Yang Mulia Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education), Ministry of Education.

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat followed by a welcoming remark by Yang Mulia Datin Paduka Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, UTB Vice-Chancellor as the Honorary Chair and Advisor of CIIS 2022.

This was followed by a speech from Yang Mulia Professor Emeritus Dr. Ueda Tamon, Chief Advisor and Acting Executive Director, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Project for ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net). 

The Guest of Honour, Yang Mulia Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) Ministry of Education, also delivered his speech before officiating the opening of the CIIS 2022. This was followed by a multimedia presentation.

Also during the day, two keynote speeches were then presented as part of the conference. The first keynote speech was presented by Yang Mulia Professor Abdullah Gani from University Malaysia Sarawak entitled ‘Virtual Citizen for Border Crossing Control’. in which he discussed the concept of Virtual Citizen and its architecture in addressing the issue of border crossing control. This session was chaired by the Dean of School of Computing and Informatics, Dr Haji Sharul Tazrajiman bin Haji Tajuddin.

Meanwhile, Yang Mulia Professor Miura Jun from Toyahashi University of Technology, Japan presented on ‘Dataset issues in applying deep learning to robotics’ where he talked about the recent attempts to solve the dataset issues of Deep Learning (DL) technologies. This session was chaired by Deputy Dean of SCI, Dr Ravi Kumar Patchmuthu.

The ceremony concluded with a promotional session by the AUN-SEED-Net led by Yang Mulia Ms, Sarunphak Kittivorapoom, Senior Project Officer, JICA Project for AUN/SEED-Net.

The CIIS 2022 conference also features prominent speakers in the field which include Yang Mulia Prof. Ts. Dr. Zuriati Ahmad Zukarnain from Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, University Putra Malaysia, where she talked about Security and Privacy in Cloud-Based E-Health System. In her presentation, she addressed the increased demand for cloud computing and its definition; technologies widely used in healthcare; their problems and possibilities; and the way protection mechanisms are organized and prepared when the company chooses to implement the latest evolving service model. Others also include Yang Mulia Professor Joarder Kamruzzaman from Federation University Australia in which he will be presenting on 19 October 2022 on ‘Machine learning in cyber-security application’.

 This year, the CIIS 2022 is gold sponsored by Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD). Other sponsors include AUN/SEED-Net JICA, Datastream Digital Sendirian Berhad (DST), and AP Solution.

CIIS 2022 aims to bring together expertise and professionals from academia and industry experienced in innovation, design and research to interact and share their experience and knowledge in the recent technological advancements in the field of Computing and Information Systems. The conference looks for significant contributions to all major fields of the Computing and Information Systems in theoretical and practical aspects. The three-day conference also holds pre-conference workshop, keynote addresses, paper presentation and poster competition.

Carrying the theme Intelligent and Resilient Digital Innovations for Sustainable living, the focus areas of this conference emphasized on promoting sustainable living practices and translating sustainable policies into action using digital innovation. This includes The Big Data, the Internet of Things (IoTs), Machine Learning, Business Intelligence, Predictive Analytics, Digital reality, Blockchain, SMAC (Social, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud, Product and Design technology, Smart Products, User Experience (UX), Human Centred Design (HCD), Additive Manufacturing, Information Security, Computer Networks and Cyber Technologies. 

This conference is one of the several initiatives undertaken by the School of Computing and Informatics to foster a rich knowledge exchange and equip individuals with hands-on experience with data handling. This year, about 35 submissions from several countries which include Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Australia were received. After rigorous review process, only 24 papers were accepted to be presented at the conference.
