His Royal Highness Prince (Dr.) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), graciously consented to officiate the eighth UTB Convocation Festival 2023. The event took place at the Teratak Putih, Phase 2, UTB.

Upon arrival, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Pro-Chancellor of UTB was greeted by the Minister of Education and Chair of UTB Council, Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr. Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Md. Salleh and UTB Vice-Chancellor, Yang Mulia Datin Paduka Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman.

Also in attendance at the ceremony were members of the UTB Council, senior government officials, invited guests as well as staff and students of UTB.

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar.

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince then consented to officiate the eighth UTB Convocation Festival 2023, followed by the call of Takbir and a multimedia presentation.

The ceremony then proceeded with His Royal Highness consented to view the ‘i am Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning’ (iAIML): Redefining Tomorrow exhibition located at the Teratak Putih, UTB.

The theme embraces the concept of i am Artificial intelligence, and Machine Learning (iAML) where it underscores the graduates’ role in redefining tomorrow’s world. It is through iAML advancements that encourage them to be agents of positive change in their respective fields. Stepping into the midst iAIML where the graduates stand at the forefront, redefining the very fabric of the future. It acknowledges their tireless efforts in advancing iAIML research and development. 

The convocation festival exhibition this year showcased eight projects undertaken by the graduating students under the theme iAIML which include Mathematical Optimisation Modelling and Metaheuristics by Dayang Hasnanizan binti Haji Mohd Taib, Doctor of Philisophy in Applied Mathematics and Economics; Utilising Digital Image Correlation for Strain Measurement of Materials by Awang Sanford Lim Sen Hui, Master of Science (by Coursework) in Mechanical Engineering; Design and Fabrication the Upper Limb Rehabilitation Assisted Robot Prototype by Awang Muhammad Khair Hamizan bin Surzana @ Abdul Khaliq, Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering; Development of a Twelve Degrees of Freedom (12DOF) Hexapod Robot Prototype by Awang Muhammad Yazeed bin A. Jamil, Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Major in Electrical Power); Prediction of Grain Size Distribution from Wireline Logs (Machine Learning Aspect) by Dayang Nurin ‘Azma Syaheerah binti Zainal Arifin, Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Petroleum Engineering; Your Face Has a Gender: A Study on How Artificial Intelligence is Used to Predict the Gender of Southeast Asian People by Awang Mohd Muqri Izzuddin bin Haji Md Jamil, Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computing with Data Analytics; Protecting ASEAN’s Peatlands: Machine Learning for Modelling Peat Groundwater Level and Peat Fire Occurrences by Awang Fuad bin Haji Hussain, Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computing with Data Analytics; and Benchable: A Sustainable and Transformative Bench by Awang Mohamad Harun bin Abdul Khalid, Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Product Design.

His Royal Highness also consented to watch performances by the university student clubs, which include martial arts, traditional dance, Tausyeh and others.  

The University currently has 57 co-curricular clubs, actively encouraging student engagements in these clubs and their activities. Their participation offers both recreation and the development of vital skills like teamwork, leadership, and communication.  

Furthermore, His Royal Highness then consented to officiate and visit the Shell .ai Lab sponsored by Shell Deepwater Borneo. 

Prior to leaving the festival, His Royal Highness consented to receive a Pesambah from UTB students with the theme ‘Evolution of Artificial Intelligence’ and consented for a photography session with members of the UTB Student Representative Council 2023/2024.

A series of events have been lined up in conjunction with the 8th UTB Convocation Festival 2023 including Majlis Khatam Al-Quran, Ecovention, No Bag Day, International (Culture) Day, Traditional Attire Day, UTBeWell, Unicycle, Bridges of Opportunity, UTBerjaya, and AI Talk.

The annual Festival aims to celebrate the students who have completed their studies and will receive their respective degrees at the UTB Convocation Ceremony on 14 September 2023 at the Plenary Hall of the International Convention Centre in Berakas.
