His Royal Highness Prince (Dr.) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince, Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) and Patron of The Crown Prince Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement (CIPTA) Award, consented to grace the Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2023 Ceremony held today at the Plenary Hall, International Convention Centre (ICC).

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince was greeted upon arrival by Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Minister of Education; Yang Mulia Datin Paduka Professor Dr Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UTB; and Yang Mulia Hajah Farida Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer of Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad.

Also in attendance were Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad; Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Acting Deputy Chair of Council; Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Ahmad bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Di-Raja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa, Attorney General; and Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office.

The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar.

The Vice-Chancellor of UTB and Chairperson of CIPTA 2023, Yang Mulia Datin Paduka Professor Dr Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman, then delivered the welcoming speech. This was followed by a multimedia presentation and the activation of the CIPTA trophy mechanism.

The biennial competition, which was inaugurated in 2005, has been organised by UTB with Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad as partner and sponsor. CIPTA is an acronym for ‘Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement'. The objectives of the Competition are: to inspire the youth and public to develop creative products, processes or technology for national aspirations; to encourage inventions and innovations; to recognise and award creative talents; to encourage research and development; to promote manufacturing processes and technological product development; to embed the culture of science, engineering and technology to the youth and public in Brunei Darussalam; and to foster collaborative linkages within Brunei Darussalam and ASEAN region.

Yang Mulia Pengiran Dr Rafidah binti Pengiran Haji Petra, Co-Head of the Technical Committee presented a summary of the overall appraisal from the CIPTA 2023 Judges Team Leads followed by the announcement of the winning projects.

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, who is also the Patron of the competition consented to present cash prizes, trophies and certificates to the winners and recipients of consolation prizes in Local Categories 1, 2 & 3, Smart Junior Competition, and ASEAN Categories.

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince later consented to receive a Pesambah from the Organising Committee of CIPTA 2023, presented by Yang Mulia Abdul Mu’izz Safiuddin bin Sherin, a first-year student of Product Design from the UTB School of Design who designed the royal gift.

Before leaving the Ceremony, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince consented to interact with the winners who exhibited their inventions.

In conjunction with the CIPTA 2023, the CIPTA 2023 Seminar Series will take place at Lecture Theater 2, UTB on 9, 10 and 12 June 2023. The three-day Seminar Series will include CIPTA 2023 Executive Seminar with the theme: Innovations for Sustainable Development Goals; Presentations by Winners with the theme: Spreading the Winning Vibes; and CIPTA 2023 Forum with the theme: Pave Way Forward with Stakeholders.

CIPTA 2023 is the tenth CIPTA competition, themed ‘Innovations for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’. The theme has been developed for CIPTA 2023 to respond to the 2030 Agenda. This is also in line with Brunei Darussalam’s National Vision, Wawasan Brunei 2035. Brunei Darussalam has given profound observations by focusing on nine (9) SDGs goals, namely: Goal 1 - on no poverty, Goal 2 - on zero hunger, Goal 3- on good health & well-being, Goal 8 - on decent work & economic growth, Goal 10 - on reduced inequalities, Goal 12 - on responsible consumption & production, Goal 13 - on climate action, Goal 16 - on peace, justice & strong institutions and Goal 17 - on partnerships in depth.

There are three main categories in CIPTA 2023 namely: ‘Local Categories’, ‘Smart Junior Competition’ and ‘ASEAN Categories’. The Local Categories comprise of three categories: “Category 1: Creating New Product, Process or Technology; Category 2: Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology; and Category 3: Creating New or Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology by Young Inventors. The Smart Junior Competition is of Bruneian school students from lower secondary school students, whereas the ASEAN categories comprised of two categories: New Invention & Innovation Category and ASEAN Young Inventor Category.
