The students of the Master’s in Management and Technology Programme, Intake 11, at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) attended a leadership talk delivered by Yang Mulia Puan Yusbazillah binti Haji Md Yusof, Finance Manager at Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) and moderated by Yang Mulia Mr Osmali Othman, provided students with valuable insights into leadership from one of Brunei Darussalam’s leading corporate figures.

With over 15 years of professional experience, Puan Yusbazillah shared her leadership journey and the lessons she has learned while serving in one of Brunei’s most vital industries. BSP, as the nation’s leading energy company, contributes more than 90 percent to Brunei Darussalam’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

She highlighted that effective leadership extends beyond authority and corporate success, noting that true leadership involves understanding one’s purpose, strengthening collaboration, and driving both personal and organisational growth. She explained that leading across generations requires empathy, patience, and an appreciation for diverse perspectives, while emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in managing conflicts, navigating complex team dynamics, and engaging effectively with stakeholders.

She also mentioned the importance of resilience in overcoming career setbacks and emerging stronger from challenges. Furthermore, she stated that authenticity enables leaders to embrace their individuality, while recognising small achievements helps to motivate teams and validate individual contributions. Team bonding, whether through formal activities or informal interactions, was also emphasised as an essential factor in strengthening workplace relationships.

In addition, she reflected on the importance of maintaining work-life balance, observing that a strong support system and the ability to remain positive despite challenges are vital in sustaining both personal well-being and professional responsibilities.

The session concluded with Puan Yusbazillah encouraging students to remain determined in the face of obstacles and to approach leadership with confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose.

The talk provided students with the opportunity to bridge academic learning with real-world leadership experiences, equipping them with practical knowledge and inspiration as they prepare for their future careers.
