> GREENTEXS HOSTS EXPERT TALK ON GREEN ENERGY AND SMART ELECTRONICS – A NATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

The Centre for Green Technology and Sustainability Research (GreenTExS) at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) hosted an Expert Talk Series titled “Green Energy and Smart Electronics – A National Perspective”, held at the Lecture Hall, School of Applied Science and Mathematics Building, UTB.

The talk was attended by over 120 participants, including staff and students from various schools and faculties across UTB, reflecting strong interest in national sustainability efforts and technological innovation.

The session was delivered by Yang Mulia Puan Shirley Sikun, Head of the Energy Transition Division, Department of Energy, at the Prime Minister’s Office, who provided an engaging and insightful overview of Brunei’s energy sector key levers for the energy transition, renewable energy initiatives, and the growing importance of smart electronics in enabling a sustainable future.

Also present were Yang Mulia Tuan Zulfadli bin Abu Bakar and Yang Mulia Puan Izzalina binti Dato Paduka Haji Kamis, both from the Department of Energy, highlighting the Ministry’s continued engagement with academic and research initiatives in support of national development goals.

In her presentation, Yang Mulia Puan Shirley shared her experience of pioneering projects under Brunei Shell Joint Ventures, including the successful delivery of BSP’s 3.3MWp flagship solar PV project, as well as a study on carbon capture and storage (CCS) and the introduction of renewable energy certificates (RECs). She also shared the Net-Metering initiative, launched in 2021 by the Department of Energy, at the Prime Minister’s Office to further encourage the uptake of small-scale solar in the country.

She also emphasised the critical role of smart electronics in renewable energy deployment, powering smart grids that support real-time monitoring, optimisation, and balancing of electricity demand and supply. These systems, she noted, are essential to achieving a prudent, resilient, efficient, and modern energy transition.

Yang Mulia Puan Shirley further encouraged academics and research students to actively contribute to Brunei’s energy transition through innovation, applied research, and collaboration—highlighting the vital role of the academic community in supporting the country’s low-carbon aspirations and national sustainability goals.

This Expert Talk is part of GreenTExS’s ongoing commitment to fostering sustainability-oriented research, strengthening academia-industry dialogue, and nurturing future leaders in green technology and smart solutions.

The event concluded with a token of appreciation presented to the guest speaker by Yang Mulia Dr Kenneth Siok Kiam Yeo, Programme Leader for the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Programme Area, UTB.
