FIRST INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION OF UTB MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEGREES

> FIRST INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION OF UTB MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEGREES

UTB has successfully attained the accreditation from the world-renowned Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) United Kingdom in October 2022 for both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes offered by the Mechanical Engineering Programme Area of the Faculty of Engineering.

The accredited Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering will meet, in part, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and also automatically meet in full, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), both with the Engineering Council UK.

The accreditation was also awarded for the Master of Science (by coursework) in Mechanical Engineering programme as meeting the further learning requirement for CEng registration. Hence, graduates from the accredited MSc programme who also have an accredited BEng (Hons) will satisfy the educational base for Chartered Engineer registration with the Engineering Council, UK.

This accomplishment is a testament that UTB’s Mechanical Engineering programmes have attained a standard which is internationally recognised and that the graduates have the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills needed to solve complex engineering problems. This is in line with the requirements of the Washington Accord international agreement and supports the Sustainable Development Goals for quality education.

This accreditation is a key foundation for the practice of Engineering at the professional level and UTB graduates are well-positioned to support the role of engineering in building a more sustainable and equitable world.

Ir. Dr. Denni Kurniawan, UTB’s Programme Leader of Mechanical Engineering, acknowledged the staff and students of the Programme Area as well UTB management on this achievement. According to Dr. Denni, IMechE expressed confidence in the programmes, giving several commendations about the modules, staff, students, facilities and quality management system.

He added that the strong support provided by the Industry Advisory Board (IAB) whose members are the captains of industry in Brunei and the IMechE Brunei Group signifies a mark of assurance that the Mechanical Engineering programmes meet the standards set by the profession. The engineering industry will also benefit from the continuing professional development opportunities provided by UTB's Postgraduate Micro-credentials programme where modules in the accredited MSc Mechanical Engineering can be individually taken up by the public.

Professor Ir. Dr. Ramesh Singh Kuldip Singh, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, added that achieving the IMechE UK accreditation is indeed a significant milestone for the university and the country.

He stressed that the Faculty is committed to the development and recognition of good practice in engineering education. He believes that the engineering programmes offered at UTB are of high quality and are able to produce holistic graduates for the industry.

With this accomplishment, UTB joins the ranks of well-established universities in the United Kingdom and internationally whose degree programmes meet the high standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence. This contributes to UTB's aspiration to ensure its graduates are well-qualified for the local and global market, in support of Brunei Wawasan 2035.
