> Driving Energy Efficiency: UTB Marks 40 Years of Impact with Energy Management and Auditing Training

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), through its Centre for Continuing Education and Professional Development (Tri-CEd), successfully concluded its Energy Management and Auditing Training Course, held from 2 to 4 November 2026 at UTB. Conducted as part of the University’s 40th Anniversary celebrations, the programme reflected UTB’s continued commitment to developing industry-relevant competencies and advancing sustainable development initiatives.

Held under the theme “Enhancing Efficiency for a Sustainable Tomorrow”, the three-day intensive programme provided a platform to strengthen participants’ knowledge and practical skills in energy management and auditing. The initiative supported Brunei Darussalam’s national energy efficiency agenda and aligned with the aspirations of Wawasan Brunei 2035.

The successful delivery of the programme underscored UTB’s vision of becoming a global university impacting society and its mission of nurturing socially responsible talents rooted in Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) values, while contributing to the development of a globally competitive and entrepreneurial society.

The course was structured around four comprehensive modules covering the principal areas of energy management and energy auditing. These included Introduction to Energy Auditing, Energy Conservation and Energy Management; Thermal Energy Systems; Electrical Energy Systems and Lighting; and Industrial Utilities and HVAC Systems. Participants explored key concepts such as energy audit methodologies, energy management systems, project planning and financial evaluation, thermofluids, steam systems, heat recovery and cogeneration, electrical distribution systems, lighting efficiency, pumps, compressors, and energy-efficient Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) operations.

The programme combined classroom-based learning with practical applications. During the first two days, participants attended lectures and technical sessions delivered by UTB academics and an external expert from the Department of Energy, Upstream and Downstream (DOEUD), Brunei.

The first day featured sessions facilitated by Yang Mulia Dr. Sheik Mohammed Sulthan, Course Coordinator; Yang Mulia Saiful Bahri Hj Md Jaafar; and Yang Mulia Prof. Dr. Reddy Prasad, alongside the external DOEUD expert. The sessions covered energy auditing fundamentals, energy management systems, project planning and management, thermofluids, boilers, steam systems, heat recovery and cogeneration.

On the second day, participants explored electrical distribution systems, electrical machines, lighting systems, pumps, compressors and HVAC applications through sessions conducted by Yang Mulia Ir. Dr. Nor Asiah Binti Muhamad, Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Mohammad Ishlah Haji Abdul Rahman and Yang Mulia Mohamed Hairol Hj Md Ali.

Day 3 began with discussions on energy audit case studies led by Yang Mulia Ir. Dr. Nor Asiah Binti Muhamad, Yang Mulia Dr. Sheik Mohammed Sulthan and the DOEUD representative.  The highlight of the programme took place on the third day with a practical walk-through energy audit of UTB facilities. Working in groups under the guidance of the facilitators, participants identified potential energy-saving opportunities and evaluated operational efficiencies across selected facilities. The exercise was followed by group presentations, during which participants proposed practical recommendations to improve energy performance and reduce energy consumption.

The course attracted  9 participants, comprising engineers, facility managers, maintenance personnel, energy officers, and government officials. Through the programme, participants strengthened their understanding of energy management principles, developed practical energy auditing skills and enhanced their ability to identify and implement energy conservation measures within their respective organisations.

Participants who fulfilled the attendance requirements, successfully completed the theoretical assessment and submitted a practical energy auditing assignment within six weeks, achieving a minimum score of 60 per cent, qualified to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Coordinated by Yang Mulia Dr. Sheik Mohammed Sulthan, the programme demonstrated UTB’s ongoing commitment to strengthening professional development opportunities, fostering industry engagement and supporting sustainable energy practices. As the University commemorates four decades of contribution to higher education and national development, initiatives such as this further reinforce its role in advancing professional competencies, impactful research and strategic collaboration in support of Industry 4.0 and Wawasan Brunei 2035.
