Elevating Academia and Leadership: Awangku Muhammad Rafiuddin’s Story

Awangku Muhammad Rafiuddin bin Pengiran Saharuddin, the current Yang Di-Pertua of Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar Universiti Teknologi Brunei (MPPUTB) for the 2023/2024 session delves into his transformative experience as a student leader while pursuing a BEng (Hons) in Chemical Engineering. Juggling academic rigor with leadership duties, Rafiuddin exemplifies the balance between academic dedication and executive responsibilities.

Reflecting on his experiences, he emphasised the invaluable lessons gained from interacting with the university’s management, participating in external events, and managing the diverse responsibilities that came with the role. His journey has not only enhanced his leadership skills but has also provided a platform for personal development and networking opportunities.

Beyond academics, he was also involved in decision making at the university and participated in external events, such as serving as a judge in the Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2023 Competition, provided him with networking opportunities and exposure to diverse perspectives.

As YDP, Rafiuddin's tenure has been marked by enhanced leadership acumen, personal growth, and the cultivation of a robust professional network. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to challenge himself, foster teamwork, and prioritise committee well-being throughout event planning stages.

Innovation and Growth: Nur Adila Puteri’s Academic Expedition

Nur Adila Puteri binti Irwan, a BSc (Hons) in Food Science & Technology student, personifies UTB’s commitment to fostering pathways of exploration and excellence. 

Her active participation in the ASEAN Data Science Explorer and the Shell Livewire Business Awards, along with her role as Chairperson of the Food Science and Technology and Agrotechnology Student Chapter (FSTA SC), highlights her journey of intellectual and personal expansion.

Nur Adila's involvement exemplifies the practical application of theoretical learning and the development of leadership qualities, aligning her closely with the values of the Canada Seeds Scholarship, recognizing her as an innovative leader prepared to make a positive impact on the global community.

Earning the scholarship, Nur Adila expressed, "The skills and experiences I gained during my university journey not only helped my personal and academic development but also aligned with the scholarship's purpose of developing innovative leaders who are ready to make a difference."

Beyond Textbooks: Dr. Hartini binti Haji Mashod’s Professional Ascendancy

Dr. Hartini binti Haji Mashod, an esteemed alumna of the UTB School of Business, reflects on her doctoral journey's profound impact on her academic and professional life.

Her time at UTB was marked by insightful mentorship from experienced academicians, fostering both theoretical understanding and practical application.

Now a research Officer at SEAMEO VOCTECH, Dr. Hartini credits UTB with laying the groundwork for her ambitious career path.

She emphasises the holistic educational approach at UTB, encompassing research collaborations, conference participation, and academic publishing – essential elements for her successful transition from academia to a dynamic professional environment.

The research-oriented environment at UTB equipped her with the skills needed to design and conduct rigorous studies, analyse data, and contribute meaningfully to the academic discourse. She added that the multifaceted approach to education has proven to be invaluable in her professional endeavours.

Dr. Hartini's UTB experience was also enriched by her exposure to international competitions and the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Programme (SSEAYP), which has honed her skills, broadened her perspectives, and fostered a global outlook.

“One of the most memorable and beneficial UTB experience was the diverse range of activities available, which provides a holistic education that extended beyond the classroom.” said Dr. Hartini.

Reflecting on her time at UTB, Hartini advises current and prospective students to embrace academic challenges, seek mentorship, engage in collaborative research, and network with lecturers.
