The Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement (CIPTA) Competition 2023 features outstanding exhibits of ideas and solutions to tackle current challenges. Entrepreneurs, innovators, and visionaries from various backgrounds are gathered to present their revolutionary concepts, enthralling audiences with their inventiveness and ingenuity.
With a focus on addressing critical issues on sustainability, the theme of the tenth installation of the CIPTA 2023 competition “Innovations for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” is developed to respond to the 2030 SDGs Agenda, which is also in line with Brunei Darussalam’s National Vision of Wawasan Brunei 2035.
The competition provided a platform for extraordinary minds to demonstrate their abilities. Hosted by Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) in partnership and sponsored by Brunei LNG. The competition has attracted 68 group submissions from Brunei Darussalam and ASEAN countries in 2023, each vying for the opportunity to make a lasting impact on society. Esteemed judges, comprising industry experts and renowned professionals, were entrusted with the arduous task of selecting the most exceptional projects among the impressive range of submissions.
In CIPTA 2021, one notable entry was "Project Poseidon", invented by Wesley Onn Wei Rong, a former student from Pusat Tingkatan Enam Sengkurong and second prize winner for CIPTA 2021 Category 3 for Young Inventors. The product was a prototype automatic flood barrier was designed to reduce damage and utilises the flood’s force to safeguard dwellings. The project garnered unanimous praise from the judges, who lauded its potential to revolutionize the construction sector.
Another noteworthy project entitled “Thermo-Responsive Biohydrogel for Controlled Drug Delivery” by Ms. Maha Mohammad Hussein Al-Rajabi from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Selangor, and first prize winner in the CIPTA 2021 ASEAN New Invention & Innovation Category. The project supported SDG Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, which not only reduced waste generation, but also developed a high demand pharmaceutical product through the adoption of sustainable practice in material’s life cycle a project.
"Smart Fish System - Water Quality Management System for Red Tilapia Rear in Polytank" was the first prize winner in Category 2 for Modifying Existing Product, Process and Technology, by Roshartiney binti Hj Damit, Hj Ismit bin Hj Mohamad and Dr Wida Susanty binti Hj Suhaili. The project also supports SDG for Clean water that utilises the adoption of Internet of Things as a solution to improve fish lifecycle safety and fish rearing quality.
The Competition served as a catalyst for collaboration, fostering connections among like-minded individuals and organizations. It provided a glimpse into a future characterized by innovation and progress, where creativity knows no limitations. CIPTA competition has inspired a revolution of innovation over the years, inspiring individuals to push the boundaries of what is possible and create a brighter future for future generations. Participants not only demonstrated their remarkable abilities, but also provided concrete solutions to some of the most critical global concerns we face today. We are certain that their innovations will help to define a brighter future for everyone.
The upcoming award presentation ceremony of CIPTA 2023 will be held on 08 June 2023 at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Brunei Darussalam. The winner will be announced, and the event is graced with the patronage of the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, His Royal Highness Prince (Dr.) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah with the consent of His Majesty the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
