As part of the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibitions (MYCE) 2022 – Digital and Technology Week, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) organised the Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2023 (CIPTA 2023) competition roadshow (Translate Malay: Jerayawara Pertandingan Anugerah CIPTA Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota 2023) held at the Main Conference Hall, International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas and via online platforms through Zoom and Facebook.

The CIPTA 2023 Roadshow aims to raise public awareness on the ongoing CIPTA 2023 competition and stimulate interest among students as well as the public to participate in the prestigious competition.

Present at the event were UTB Principal Officers; invited government and private agencies; university’s industry partners; schoolteachers; students; CIPTA 2023 committee members as well as the general public.

The roadshow commenced with a technical briefing by the CIPTA 2023 Technical Committee led by Pengiran Dr. Rafidah binti Pengiran Haji Petra, Co-head of CIPTA 2023 Technical Committee.

The proceedings saw presentations on the categories of the competition; rules and regulations; prizes and awards; important dates; the judging process as well as examples of projects submitted in the previous CIPTA competitions.

It was followed by two sharing sessions with previous CIPTA participants where the attendees were given the opportunity to ask questions and obtain clarifications on the competition.

The first sharing session was with the past participants of CIPTA in the Local Category 1,2, and ASEAN New Invention and Innovation Category. The panellists include Ms. Roshartiney binti Haji Damit, UTB Alumni; Pengiran Mohammad Zulfikri bin Pengiran Haji Zulkifly, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Alumni; Mr. T. Puspasanan @ Edmond Anan, Atin and Modtech Corporation Sendirian Berhad; and Ms. Maha Mohmmad Hussein Al-Rajabi, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

The second sharing session was with the past participants of CIPTA Local Category 3, Smart Junior Competition and ASEAN Young Inventor Category. The panellists include students from Sekolah Menengah Berakas, Ma’had Islam Brunei and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Lela Segara Terengganu, Malaysia.

The event then proceeded with a briefing by Professor Dr. Kamariah binti Ismail, Director of the UTB Enterprise Office.

In the afternoon, the roadshow continued with a two-session forum entitled Driving the Innovation Ecosystem for Brunei Darussalam towards its vision 2035 & UN SDGs moderated by Dr. Wida Susanty binti Haji Suhaili, Head of CIPTA 2023 Seminar.

The panellists for the first session include Dr. Eko Fajar Nurprasetyo, Director of PT. Hikari Solusindo Sukses, Indonesia; Mr. Keeran Janin, Founder Avantist Watches and Dart Brunei, and past CIPTA winner; Pengiran Abdul Raub bin Pengiran Haji Ghani, Education officer and past CIPTA Winner.

The second session panellists were Mr. Soon Loo, Board Director of Mission Holdings; Mr. Haji Mazrul Adini Haji Abdul Ghani, Technical Manager of Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad; and Mr. Nicholas Brian Lim Kong Yin, Deputy Head, Deputy Registrar and Deputy Senior Counsel of Brunei Intellectual Property Office (BruIPO).

The Crown Prince CIPTA Award Competition’s objectives are to inspire the youth and public to develop creative products, processes or technology for national and ASEAN aspirations; to encourage inventions and innovations from the participants; to recognise and award talents in the country as well as at ASEAN level; to encourage research and development in Brunei Darussalam; to promote industrial and manufacturing processes, technological products development, commercialisation and entrepreneurship in Brunei Darussalam; to motivate and instil the culture of science, engineering and technology among the youth and the public; and to foster collaborative linkages within Brunei Darussalam as well as the ASEAN region.

With the theme 'Innovations for Sustainable Development Goals’, the Crown Prince CIPTA Award Competition has three main categories namely: ‘Local Categories’, ‘Smart Junior Competition’ and ‘ASEAN Categories’. The Local Categories comprise of three categories: ‘Category 1: Creating New Product, Process or Technology’; ‘Category 2: Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology’; and ‘Category 3: Creating New or Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology by Young Inventors’.

The Smart Junior Competition is open to Bruneian school students from the lower secondary school students or equivalent to Year 7 to Year 9. Whilst the ASEAN Categories are comprised of two categories which are ‘New Invention & Innovation Category’ and ‘Young Inventor Category’.

Each entry will be judged based on their novelty and creativity; deployment of the end product; social, economic and sustainable design considerations; and the project report and presentation. Assessment of submitted projects will be conducted in two stages starting with the Preliminary Assessment. Only qualified entries will be allowed to proceed to the Final Assessment.

 

CATEGORY 1, 2 AND 3 (LOCAL CATEGORIES)
The winners for Category 1 and Category 2 will receive:
1st Prize - B$ 6000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate
2nd Prize - B$ 4000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate
3rd Prize - B$ 2000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate
Two Consolation Prizes – B$ 500.00 cash and certificates

The prizes for Category 3 are as follows:
1st Prize - B$ 3000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate
2nd Prize - B$ 2000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate
3rd Prize - B$ 1000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate
Two Consolation Prizes – B$ 250.00 cash and certificates

SMART JUNIOR COMPETITION
Winners in the Smart Junior Competition will receive:
1st Prize - B$ 1000.00 Cash, a trophy & certificate
2nd Prize - B$ 800.00 Cash, a trophy & certificate
3rd Prize - B$ 500.00 Cash, a trophy & certificate
Two Consolation Prizes – B$ 200.00 Cash and certificates

ASEAN CATEGORIES
The winners for New Invention & Innovation Category will receive:
1st Prize - B$ 6000.00 Cash, a trophy & certificate
2nd Prize - B$ 4000.00 Cash, a trophy & certificate

Winners of the Local Categories in Categories 1 and 2, as well as the ASEAN Categories - New Invention & Innovation Category, are eligible to compete for the Crown Prince Special Award, which includes a B$8000 cash prize and a trophy.

CIPTA 2023 is the tenth edition of the biennial competition organised by UTB in partnership with the main sponsor, Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad (Brunei LNG).

The competition encompasses all areas of Science, Technology and Engineering. It is open to all schools, technical and tertiary academic institutions, government and private organisations and the general public.
