The Centre for Research on Agrifood Science and Technology (CrAFT) and the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics (SASM) at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) hosted an industry engagement session at the SASM Lecture Hall, bringing together representatives from 10 local meat processing companies.
Titled Digital Traceability and Halal Critical Control Points (HCCP) for Meat Processing Companies in Brunei Darussalam, the session explored how digital traceability and halal assurance can strengthen food safety, improve recordkeeping and support digitalisation in the local meat processing sector.
In her welcoming remarks, Yang Mulia Dr Mas Munira binti Haji Rambli, Director of CrAFT, highlighted the centre’s commitment to supporting industry through collaborative research, technical consultancy, training and technology-driven solutions, including sensor monitoring, data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI).
Yang Mulia Dr Aida Maryam Basri, Assistant Professor in Food Science and Technology at SASM, outlined the School’s expertise and laboratory services, including food chemical analysis, shelf-life assessment and food packaging evaluation. These services can help businesses assess product quality, improve storage practices and address food safety challenges.
Yang Mulia Nur Farhana Qamarina binti Zaini, an MSc (by Research) student in Food Science and Technology at SASM, shared practical approaches to implementing digital traceability and halal assurance in meat processing, highlighting opportunities to improve monitoring, documentation and operational practices.
The session enabled direct discussions between UTB and industry representatives on potential collaboration in halal compliance, food safety testing, shelf-life studies and product development. It also provided an opportunity for companies to highlight their technical needs and explore how UTB’s expertise could help address them.
Through this initiative, CrAFT and SASM aim to strengthen industry–university collaboration by translating research and technical expertise into practical solutions that support local meat processors, enhance operational efficiency and build consumer confidence in Brunei’s meat products.
