> Advancing Engineering Innovation: UTB Hosts IEEE CASS Malaysia–Brunei Outreach

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) hosted the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) Malaysia–Brunei Outreach from 28 to 29 October 2026, bringing together academics, researchers, students, engineers and industry professionals from Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam. Organised by IEEE CASS Malaysia and UTB, the two-day programme was themed “Connecting Academia, Innovation and Professional Community” and aimed to strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange in circuits, systems and their applications.

The programme commenced on 28 October at Seminar/Meeting Room 1, Level 2, SASM Building, UTB, with registration and welcoming remarks, followed by an introduction to IEEE CASS by Yang Mulia Ts. Dr Haslina Jaafar, Chair of IEEE CASS Malaysia and Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Universiti Putra Malaysia.

The technical programme featured five lectures covering emerging developments and applications in engineering and technology. Yang Mulia Ir. Dr Noor Hazrin Hany Mohamad Hanif, Associate Professor at the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, International Islamic University Malaysia, presented on industrial machine learning for renewable energy and maritime applications. Yang Mulia Dr Kenneth Siok Kiam Yeo, Programme Leader for Electrical and Electronic Engineering at UTB’s Faculty of Engineering, shared insights into microwave filter design for wireless communications.

The programme also featured Yang Mulia Prof. Dr Chandratilak De Silva Liyanage, Vice-President of IEEE Brunei and Dean of the School of Digital Science at Universiti Brunei Darussalam, who discussed bio-inspired intelligence and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) in connecting people, smart cities and the environment.

Further sessions explored the application of technology in healthcare and advanced electronic systems. Yang Mulia Dr Lila Iznita Izhar, Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, presented on digital biomarkers in healthcare, with a focus on retinal screening and cognitive well-being. The lecture series concluded with Yang Mulia Ts. Dr Julie Roslita Rusli, Head of the Electronics Technology Section at Universiti Kuala Lumpur, who shared design techniques for ultra-low-power successive approximation register (SAR) analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs).

In addition to the technical sessions, participants engaged in networking activities and toured UTB’s laboratory facilities, gaining insights into the University’s teaching and research environment while creating opportunities for professional exchange.

On 29 October, the programme extended into the industry sector with a visit to Muara Port Company Sdn. Bhd. The visit provided participants with first-hand exposure to industrial operations and an opportunity to relate the engineering concepts discussed during the technical sessions to their practical applications in the maritime and logistics sectors.

The outreach underscored the shared commitment of IEEE CASS Malaysia and UTB to strengthening cross-border academic and professional networks, promoting the exchange of technical expertise and connecting university research with industry applications. It also reinforced the importance of regional collaboration in developing engineering capabilities and supporting innovation to address emerging technological and industrial needs.
