UTB Alumni research predicts metal failure in corrosive environment to enhance pipeline safety

13 February 2025 – A study conducted by Nur Fahima Yasmin Binti Abdul Mubin, an alumna of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), has shed light on the mechanisms of metal pipeline degradation in corrosive environments at Brunei Petroleum Technology Exhibiton & Conference 2025 (BPTEC 2025). Supervised by Dr. Reddy Prasad, Dr. Bashir Suleman Abushamin, and Dr. Mujawar Mubarak, the research focused on the impact of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) on offshore oil pipelines and introduced innovative methods to predict failures using advanced statistical tools.
Offshore oil wells in Brunei often employ waterflooding techniques, which generate hydrogen sulfide—a highly corrosive gas that gradually weakens pipelines. Over time, this corrosion leads to reduced oil and gas production, necessitating the safe shutdown of facilities to protect both workers and the environment.
The study utilised Monte Carlo Simulation to evaluate the durability of various metals in H₂S-rich environments. This research provides valuable insights for oil and gas companies, enabling them to select more durable materials, mitigate risks, and enhance operational safety. By accurately predicting metal failure, companies can extend the lifespan of pipelines, reduce maintenance costs, and improve overall efficiency, contributing to safer and more sustainable operations.
The study underscores UTB’s commitment to advancing research that addresses real-world challenges and supports Brunei Darussalam’s vision of sustainable development and industrial innovation.
