Universiti Teknologi Brunei Convocation 2017

30 September 2017 - His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) today consented to officiate the UTB Convocation 2017, held at the Plenary Hall, International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas.

His Royal Highness Prince (Dr.) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at thePrime Minister's Office, the Pro-Chancellor of UTB was also at the Ceremony.

The arrival of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince at the ICC was greeted by the Minister of Education and Chairman of the UTB Council, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman; the Vice-Chancellor of UTB, Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman; and the Registrar & Secretary of UTB, Dayang Jennifer Hiew-Lim.

Soon after the arrival, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz (Dr.) Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti, led in the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah.

The Procession of the Chancellor into the Plenary Hall then followed, led by the Bentara (mace-bearer) holding aloft the Mushaf Al-Quran.

Verses 36 - 40 of Surah Hud in the Holy Quran were recited by Yang Mulia Awangku Muhammad Wafiuddin bin Pengiran Haji Samsuddin, a graduate from the Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Finance and E-Business. Meanwhile, Yang Mulia Awang Abdul Waaliummul Fadzl @ Abdul Wahub bin Haji Wahab, a graduate from the Higher National Diploma programme in Network Engineering read the lessons from the verses.

The Vice-Chancellor of UTB then delivered the Sembah Alu-aluan.

His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Chancellor of UTB also consented to deliver the Titah.

Also at the Ceremony, His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Chancellor of UTB has consented to receive the conferment of the Honorary Doctorate in Engineering from the University.

His Majesty then consented to deliver a Titah conferring the Master's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Foundation Degree (Higher National Diploma Level 5) and Higher National Diploma to recipients listed in the Convocation Book. This was immediately followed by the call of 'Allahu Akbar, Wa Llillah il Hamd' by the graduates and all present. His Majesty then consented to present Master’s Degree to 66 graduates; Bachelor's Degree to 359 graduates; Higher National Diploma Level Five to 119 graduates; and BDTVEC Higher National Diploma to 258 graduates.

At the end of the ceremony, the Doa Selamat was read by the State Mufti. Before leaving the ICC, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince consented to mingle with the graduates and their family members.

UTB is an engineering and technology university in Brunei Darussalam that specializes in the niche areas of engineering, business, computing, applied sciences and mathematics. It was established as a higher learning institution in 1986 as Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), a higher learning institution that offered BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council, UK) Higher National Diploma programmes in Engineering, Business and Computing.

ITB was upgraded to a university on 18 October 2008 and renamed to Universiti Teknologi Brunei on 01 March 2016. UTB has gone from strength to strength with the expansion of its academic programmes, establishment of strategic partnerships with industries and universities, programmes accreditation by professional bodies, recruitment of high calibre academic staff and intensification of research and publication efforts. Although UTB has moved towards offering undergraduate and graduate programmes since 2009, UTB continues to take pride in and maintain its successful hands-on and experiential approach in teaching and learning, and also putting strong emphasis on the relevancy of its curricula to the needs of the industry.

UTB aspires to become one of the best ten universities of Engineering and Technology in South-East Asia by 2018. UTB currently offers 23 Undergraduate Degrees including its part-time degrees, five Taught Masters, Masters by Research, and PhD programmes. To date, UTB has produced 5,141 BDTVEC HND; 281 HND Level Five; 915 Bachelor's Degree and 70 Master's Degree graduates.
