07 March 2019 – In conjunction with the Crown Prince Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement (CIPTA) Award 2019 competition, a seminar themed ‘Industry 4.0: Convergence of Innovation’ was held today at the Lecture Theatre 2, Library Complex, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB). The Guest of Honour at the half-day seminar was Yang Mulia Awang Hj Ady Syarmin bin Hj Md Taib, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Services) of UTB.

The seminar began with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by welcoming remarks by Yang Mulia Dr Haji Khairul Ja’afar bin Haji Masri, Assistant Professor from the Faculty of Engineering, as Head of the Seminar Committee. The Seminar was also attended by CIPTA participants, entrepreneurs, students and staff of the University.

Two presentations were presented in the Seminar. The first presentation entitled Expose Your Talent to the World Through Creative and Innovative Thinking” was presented by Yang Mulia Associate Professor Dr Mohd Mustafa Al Bakri Abdullah, Associate Professor from the Faculty Engineering Technology of University Malaysia Perlis, Malaysia; and Yang Mulia Awang R. Rizky A. Adiwilaga, Senior Legal Advisor of Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development from Institute Teknologi Bandung presented on “Intellectual Property Commercialization Indonesia Currently: Case Study Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB)”

The Crown Prince CIPTA Award is a biennial competition organized by Universiti Teknologi Brunei, in partnership with Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd. CIPTA 2019 is the eighth CIPTA competition, themed ‘Industry 4.0: Convergence of Innovation’. There are three local categories in CIPTA 2019: ‘Category 1 – Creating New Product, Process or Technology’; ‘Category 2 – Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology’; and ‘Category 3 – Creating New or Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology by Young Inventors’. The ‘Smart Junior Competition’ is for lower secondary school students (Year 7-9) in the country. Meanwhile, the ASEAN Category is participated by individuals or teams from ASEAN other than Brunei Darussalam. The ASEAN category has two sub-categories namely: New Invention & Innovation Category, and the Young Inventor Category.

The Crown Prince CIPTA Award is aimed to encourage and develop the culture of creations, inventions and innovations in Brunei Darussalam and covers all areas of Sciences, Technology and Engineering. The competition is open to all schools, technical and tertiary academic institutions, government and private organisations and the general public. The inauguration of the competition was held in 2005.

The judging process of CIPTA entries had been completed on 6 March 2019, and the competition will culminate with an Award Ceremony at a date that will be announced in due course.
