RAISING MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS THROUGH ART

10 October 2020 – World Mental Health Day is observed annually on 10 October around the globe with the overall objective of raising awareness on mental health issues and mobilising efforts in support of mental health.

To raise awareness of mental health issue and advocate against social stigma within UTB community Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), the Counselling Unit of the Student Affairs Office, in collaboration with the Student Representative Council (Translate: Majilis Perwakilan Pelajar) (MPP) Executive Committees Publicity and Info-Communication, Technology (PICT); Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE); and Leadership, Development and Mentor (LDM) organised an art contest for UTB students to express how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted their mental health through a creative and artistic expression of their choice.

The art contest was launched on 7th September until 3rd October where students were invited to create a 2D piece of art that expresses their thoughts, feelings, or perceptions on the phrase “My Mental Health in 2020” and a short statement (1-3 sentences) about their piece and how their responded to prompt the art piece.

Prizes include a cash money of BND100 for first place, BND70 for second place, and BND50 for third place. The top 3 winners of the art contest were announced on the UTB World Mental Health Day event.

Thirteen 2D art pieces from various Faculty and Schools were showcased since 5 October 2020 at the White Canopy of the University. The art pieces were also posted on the MPP social media account. The winners of the competition were chosen via online and social media voting which was open to public and were selected by a guest judge and professional artist based on its originality, creativity and relevance to the theme.

A 2-minute video was also produced in conjunction with the event to raise awareness about mental health and to break stigma around mental health.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Pg Ida Nurul-Fitri binti Pengiran Haji Kahar presented the prizes to three winners, first place went to Mohammad Nadhir Bin Haji Mohamed Husaini from Creative Multimedia, School of Computing and Informatics; for second place went to Mek Shuet Yi from Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering; and Dk Nur Syazwani Rasidah binti Pg Adi Noor from Digital Media, School of Computing and Informatics bagged third place.

In addition to the announcement of the art contest, the event includes interactive games and activities, and food vendors.

This event aims to bring the UTB community together to celebrate positive wellbeing and encourage people to seek immediate help and to reduce the impact of mental illness of an individual’s life.
