31 October 2019 – As part of its efforts to promote the Omani culture in Brunei Darussalam, while further strengthening people-to-people links which are important components of the existing strong ties between the Sultanate of Oman and Brunei Darussalam, an Omani publications corner named after Ibn Al-Thahabi a renowned Omani physician, was launched by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Minister of Education at the library of UTB.
Ibn Al-Thahabi Publications Corner will contain around 500 publications that highlight the contributions made by prominent Omani scholars on several branches of knowledge, especially in the fields of architecture, science, and medicines. The publications corner also contains some interesting leisure reading collection on the history, geography, culture, tradition, literature and heritage of the Sultanate of Oman.
His Excellency Sheikh Ahmed bin Hashel Al-Maskari, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Brunei Darussalam informed that the first batch of publications delivered to UTB’s library contained about 180 books and the Embassy is working closely with the concerned authorities in the Sultanate of Oman to increase in the nearest possible future the overall number of Ibn Al-Thahabi Publications Corner to 500 publications covering wide range of scientific disciplines that are in line with the academic programs offered at UTB.
Ibn Al-Thahabi (Abu Mohammed Abdellah Ibn Mohammed Al-Azdi) after whom the publications corner is named is a prominent Omani scholar famous for his book Kitab Al-Ma’a (The Book of Water), which is a medical encyclopedia, that lists the names of diseases, its medications, physiological process or treatment. It is the first known alphabetical classification of medical terms written in Arabic language.
Ibn Al-Thahabi Publications Corner aims to foster the love for reading among Bruneian youth and works in line with the initiatives of the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam in building a nation of readers. As part of this effort, similar Omani publications corners were officially launched at the library of UNISSA in February 2016 and at UBD’s library in May 2017 and at the library of KUPU SB in July 2018.
His Excellency the Ambassador also said that the launching of Ibn Al-Thahabi Publications Corner comes as a fruit of productive joint cooperation between the Embassy and UTB.
Acting Vice-Chancellor of UTB, Yang Mulia Awang Haji Ady Syarmin bin Haji Md Taib, said the university is pleased to receive the books and hoped it would be well utilized by the university’s students and staff.
In conjunction with the launching ceremony His Excellency Sheikh Ahmed Bin Hashil Al Maskari presented UTB’s library with a framed portrait showing His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mui’zzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam with His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, the Sultan of Oman, during a visit to the Sultanate of Oman on the year 1984.
Also present during the launching ceremony were Deputy Minister of Education, Yang Mulia Datin Seri Paduka Dr. Dayang Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Md Salleh; Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Qatar to Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Jassim Ali Abdullah Al-Obaidli; Ambassador of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Emad bin Abdul Aziz bin Saad Al-Muhana; Ambassador of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Kuwait to Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Salah Mubarak Musleh R. Al Mutairi; and Yang Mulia Dr. Awang Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education), Ministry of Education.
