12 APRIL 2018 –  The Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2019 (translate Malay: Anugerah CIPTA Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota 2019) was officially launched today in a ceremony held at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom, Empire Hotel and Country Club. The Guest of Honour at the ceremony was Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Minister of Education. CIPTA 2019 is the eighth installment of the biennial competition organised by Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), in partnership with Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd, who is also the sponsor.

Also present at the ceremony were Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Acting Permanent Secretary of Education and Mr. Patrice Girard, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd, who is also the Co-Chairperson of CIPTA 2019 Executive Committee.

The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and doa selamat by Awang Haji Mohd Azrol bin Hani Zaini, Mosque Affairs Officer, followed by a Welcoming Speech by the Chairperson of the CIPTA 2019 Executive Committee, Yang Mulia Professor Dr Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, the Vice-Chancellor of UTB.

Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Minister of Education then delivered his speech and officially launched the Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2019 Competition. A multimedia presentation was then shown. At the ceremony, several previous winners of CIPTA exhibited their inventions in a showcase.

The acronym CIPTA stands for Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement, and it is also a Malay word meaning to create or to invent. The aim of the competition is to encourage and to develop the culture for creation, invention and innovation in Brunei Darussalam.

The theme for this year’s CIPTA Award is ‘Industry 4.0: Convergence of Innovation’. The current Fourth Industrial Revolution or “Industry 4.0” is the fusion of digital, physical and biological paradigms, i.e. building on the digital technologies from the Third Industrial Revolution. It supports one of the strategies of Brunei’s Vision 2035 which is to develop a smart society and improve the quality of life for its citizens. This theme can create the way forward for Brunei and ASEAN countries to achieve a sustainable growth that is based on human capital, new technology and smart innovation.

A Technical Briefing session was also conducted by Dr Aida Maryam binti Haji Basri from the CIPTA 2019 Technical Committee. The briefing was attended by prospective CIPTA participants from amongst the attendees, teachers, staff and students from various secondary schools and education institutions. The briefing provides a detailed explanation on the categories of competition, rules and regulations, assessment process and judging criteria.

There are three main categories namely: ‘Local Categories’, ‘Smart Junior Competition’ and ‘ASEAN Categories’. The Local Categories comprise of three categories: ‘Category 1: Creating New Product, Process or Technology’, ‘Category 2: Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology’ and ‘Category 3: Creating New or Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology by Young Inventors’.

Smart Junior Competition is The Smart Junior Competition is open to lower secondary school students or equivalent, with the age of 12-14 years old.

Whilst the ASEAN Categories are comprised of two categories which are ‘New Invention & Innovation Category’ and ‘Young Inventor Category’.

Each entry will be judged based on their novelty and creativity; deployment of end product; social, economic and sustainable design considerations; and the project report and presentation. Assessment of submitted projects will be conducted in two stages starting with the Preliminary Assessment. Only qualified entries will be allowed to proceed to the Final Assessment.


The winners for Category 1 and Category 2 will receive:

1st Prize      – B$ 6000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate

2nd Prize     – B$ 4000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate

3rd Prize      – B$ 2000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate

Two Consolation Prizes – B$ 500.00 cash and certificates

1st Prize      – B$ 3000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate

2nd Prize     – B$ 2000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate

Winners in the Smart Junior Competition will receive:

1st Prize      – B$ 1000.00 cash & certificate

Winners from the Local Categories in Category 1 and Category 2, and in the ASEAN Categories – New Invention & Innovation Category are eligible to compete for the Crown Prince CIPTA Award with the grand prize of B$8000 and Trophy.

The competition encompasses all areas of Science, Technology and Engineering. It is open to all schools, technical and tertiary academic institutions, government and private organisations and the general public. With the official launching of CIPTA 2019, participation into all the categories is now open. The deadline for participating in CIPTA 2019 is on 31 October 2018. More information can be obtained from
