Introduction

The undergraduate programmes in Petroleum and Chemical Engineering have been designed to provide qualified and skilful engineers for the evergrowing upstream and diversifying downstream industries in Brunei Darussalam. The programmes impart a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, which will equip the graduates with the core technical skills, enhanced problem-solving skills, analytical and management skills required to become a successful engineer across a wide range of businesses and companies Our students will also benefit from our strong links with industries which provides the students with invaluable exposure into their prospective careers, awareness of ‘real-world’ problems they need to solve, and greater opportunities for employment.

The programmes also include a period of industrial placement between the third and fourth year for the BEng in Chemical Engineering Programme and full semester for the BEng in Petroleum Engineering Programme. This industrial placement aims to provide a platform for the students to gain valuable work experience under the guidance of an industry mentor.

 

Undergraduate Programmes

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Chemical Engineering (E104)

Chemical Engineering is about the design, operation and optimisation of safe, environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient processes which convert raw materials to the useful products which we rely on in our everyday lives. Chemical Engineers have a wide choice of potential careers. They can be found working in a large variety of industries such as oil & gas, chemicals, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, energy, water, food & drink and fast-moving consumer goods, to name but a few. In Brunei, with a degree in Chemical Engineering, your career would most likely be in but is not limited to, the oil and gas downstream sector. This is becoming an increasingly important growth area within the country’s economy, and Chemical Engineering students should find themselves well placed amongst their peers to secure a job upon graduation.

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Petroleum Engineering (E109)

This degree aims to provide graduates with the skills required to become successful petroleum engineers. They will be able to be employed across a wide range of disciplines within the petroleum industry, both in large oil companies and in oilfield service companies. Graduates who choose not to accept jobs in the industry will be highly employable in other areas due to their enhanced problem solving, analytical and management skills.

Careers and Further Studies

Career opportunities are available in a wide range of organisations within the private and government sectors such as oil and gas,  health, safety and environment organisations, pharmaceuticals, energy and finance. Furthermore, graduates are equipped with fundamental problem-solving and numeracy skills which enable them to adapt to the challenges of working in many industries as well as in research and development.

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • At least a Credit Six in the Malay Language at GCE ‘O’ Level
    (applicable only for Bruneian students applying for Government Scholarship)
  • At least a Credit Six in Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level or it’s equivalent
  • At least a Credit Six in the English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level or an IELTS score of 6.0 or a TOEFL minimum overall score of 550 or its equivalent.

For BEng (Hons) in Chemical Engineering:

  • A minimum of 240 ‘A’ level points for three ‘A’ level passes; the three ‘A’ level passes must be in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (excluding Further Mathematics) at Grade C or better.

    OR
  • An International Baccalaureate Diploma score of 28 points with a minimum of 5 points in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry at standard level or a minimum of 4 points at a higher level.

    OR
  • A relevant BTEC/BDTVEC Higher National Diploma or it’s equivalent with at least 60% of the modules at Merit or higher, including all analytical modules such as Mathematics and Fluid Mechanics.

    OR
  • Relevant work experience and qualifications deemed to be equivalent to one of the above to be decided on a case by case basis by the faculty.

 

For BEng (Hons) in Petroleum Engineering:

  • A minimum of 240 ‘A’ level points for three ‘A’ level passes; the three ‘A’ level passes must be in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (excluding Further Mathematics) at Grade C or better.

    OR
  • An International Baccalaureate Diploma score of 28 points with a minimum of 5 points in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry at standard level or a minimum of 4 points at a higher

    OR

  • For mature applicants: standard university requirements for mature candidates as prescribed by university regulations apply

The BEng Chemical Engineering is to be accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and UK Engineering Council. The BEng Petroleum Engineering is to be accredited by the Energy Institute (EI).
