Aims and Objectives

The aim of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme is to produce graduates who have a professional knowledge, confidence, and abilities to take leadership responsibilities in practicing engineer, business and community. This programme also provides life skills to the graduates to cope with the challenges of a rapidly changing work environment and local & global socioeconomic needs.

Careers and Further Studies

Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a profession that uses science, technology, and problem-solving skills to design, construct, and maintain products, services, and information systems. An Electrical and Electronics Engineer will have a wide range of job opportunities such as design engineer, project engineer, research engineer, systems and design engineer, software engineer, to name a few.

Admission Requirements

General Requirements

Applicants for admission to BEng programme must satisfy the following minimum entry requirements:

  • At least a Credit Six in the Malay language at GCE Ordinary Level (applicable only for Bruneians applying for a Government Scholarship).
  • At least a Credit Six in Mathematics at GCE Ordinary Level or its equivalent.
  • At least a Credit Six in English Language at GCE Ordinary Level or an IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL with a minimum overall score of 550 or its equivalent.
    Programme Specific Requirements

The minimum programme entry requirements to the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering are:

  • A minimum of 220 ‘A’ Level points for 3 ‘A’ level passes in both Mathematics and Physics at grade ‘C’ or higher, and a Science Subject (normally include Chemistry, Biology and Further Mathematics).

    OR

  • A minimum of 180 ‘A’ Level points for 2 ‘A’ level passes in Mathematics and Physics at grade ‘C’ or higher.

    OR

  • An International Baccalaureate score of 28 points with a minimum of 5 points in Physics and Mathematics at standard level or 4 points at a higher level, and preferably with two relevant subjects at higher level

    OR

  • A relevant BTEC/BDTVEC Higher National Diploma or its equivalent with at least 60% or higher of the modules at Merit including 60% 0f the analytical modules as identified by the programme area.

    OR

  • For mature applicants: Standard university requirements for mature candidates as prescribed by university regulations apply.

BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (HONS) IN MECHATRONIC ENGINEERING (E106)

Mechatronics is a multi-disciplinary study dealing with the integration of mechanical devices, electronics, intelligent controllers and computers. Many new generations of consumer or commercial products can be classified as mechatronic products as they involve mechanical as well as electronic components. The need for mechatronic education has grown due to the increase in the number and importance of such systems and devices. This programme is designed to provide in-depth knowledge in the fundamentals, design, analysis and operation of mechatronic systems and will be conducted by faculty from both the Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering departments at UTB. 

The main focus is to provide students with necessary skills to solve engineering related problems and to develop in students professional and ethical attitude, effective communication skills, teamwork skills, multidisciplinary approach and ability to relate engineering issues to broader social context.

Introduction

The aims of the programme:

  • Graduates will have the ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering in all aspects of Mechatronics Engineering.
  • Graduates will be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
  • Graduates will acquire the skills to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
  • Graduates will be able to apply theoretical knowledge and to conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data for conclusions.
  • Graduates will have the ability to suggest modifications and/or design/ develop systems and processes which meet the needs of Brunei Darussalam.
  • Graduates will acquire the skills to model real life problems using software and hardware platforms and to work and contribute to multidisciplinary tasks.
  • Graduates will have the ability to succeed in higher learning and research.
  • Graduates will be able to apply entrepreneurial, managerial and leadership skills to work effectively as an individual or as a team member.

Career Opportunities

Mechatronics engineers design, build and operate intelligent products and systems of today and for tomorrow. These engineers will be increasingly in demand as more industries seek to apply evolutionary advances in computers, electronics, sensors and actuators to improve products processes and services.

Mechatronics graduates can find jobs in a variety of fields: oil & gas, industrial automation, intelligent systems, manufacturing, robotics and more.
