23 July 2018 – University life begins today for more than 400 new students of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB). The new set of student intake for the academic year 2018/2019 flocked to the campus to enrol today. The enrolment session marks the start of the ‘Minggu Orientasi’ a five-day orientation programme which is designed for the new students to familiarise themselves with campus life. The 2018/2019 intake is made up of undergraduate degree programmes, and also Taught Masters and Graduate Research students.
The new students will have the opportunity to meet with their programme lecturers and gain further insight on the academic programme that they will be pursuing. During the orientation programme, the students will be given a tour around the campus to get familiarised with the support services and facilities that are available at the University. The orientation week is organised by the Offices of the Registrar Office1, and Student Affairs Office2 and also the Student Representative Council of UTB3 (MPPUTB).
The orientation programme is also an opportunity for the students to adapt to university life; assimilate all the required information and become part of the university. They also get to meet with members of MPPUTB, which is a vibrant and active student body at the University. They will also be participating in a number of interactive activities lined up throughout the week. One of the activities is talks on topics such as motivation, counselling, religion, and Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB). Guest speakers from the Health Promotion Centre4, and Narcotics Control Bureau Department5 will also conduct talks. The highlight of the Orientation Programme will be the Vice-Chancellor’s Address which will be held on Tuesday, 24 July 2018.
In this year’s academic year, the first batch of students will enrol in the new 4-year undergraduate degree programs from the School of Design6: Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Architecture, and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Product Design.
UTB currently offers 24 undergraduate degrees, 7 Masters by Coursework, Masters by Research, and PhD programmes in Engineering, Business, Computing and Informatics. UTB is recognized as a four-star institution based on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), and achieved a 442 ranking in the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Ranking (QSWUR) this year making it one of the youngest universities and fastest university in Asia to be ranked Top 500 in QSWUR.
