Assalamualaikum Warrahmatullahi Wabarakatuh
Welcome to Universiti Teknologi Brunei.
Happy New Year 2022. The last couple of years had brought so many changes and challenges to our daily lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, we have transitioned to the Endemic Phase and will continue to live with the virus in this New Normal. The global pandemic COVID-19 presented a great opportunity when our university has to quickly adapt and make necessary adjustments according to the changes during this period, and to strategise well in ensuring that the university could continue to operate and still produce a high-quality experience for both staff and students.
Alhamdulillah, with the guidance from Ministry of Health, UTB is ready to open our campus and will continue to adapt both virtual and face to face learnings. We still exercise SOP for COVID-19, scanning BruHealth codes and temperature checks in 3 main locations in UTB campus. Alhamdulillah, our vaccination rate as of today has reached almost 100% for both staff and students.
Please allow me to introduce Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB in short) first, UTB is an Engineering and Technological University in Negara Brunei Darussalam. It was first established in 1986 as an Institut Teknologi Brunei and upgraded to a university status in 2008 before it changes its name to the present one in 2016. We are a small university under 50 years of age, with 1,522 students, 143 academic staff and 120 support staff. (263 staff in total)]. UTB has six academic Faculty, Schools and Centre in Engineering, Business, Computing and Informatics, Applied Sciences and Mathematics, Design, Communication, Teaching and Learning, and three research centres in transport, innovative engineering and Agri-food science and technology.
UTB nurtures socially responsible talents committed to building a global and entrepreneurial society in pursuit of innovation and industry-relevant capabilities which supports Brunei’s Vision 2035. UTB aspires to fulfill its vision by being “A Global University Impacting Society”. Alhamdulillah, I am pleased to say that UTB has indeed made great progress over the years and continues to rise in the global rankings. Currently we are ranked at the 344th place in the QS World University Rankings and more recently, for the first time in history, we received the full 5-star ratings in 8 categories including B.Eng (Hons) Civil and Structural Engineering for programme strength, thus placing UTB among the 15 universities in the world and the only university in Southeast Asia to receive the prestigious QS 5-Star Plus rating for an outstanding university. Our Petroleum Engineering programme is also in the top 101-150 in QSWUR.This recognition acknowledges our research excellence, teaching quality, globalization experience for students and capacity for nurturing student talent.
Last year, UTB became the first university in Brunei Darussalam to introduce the 3-Year Degree Progamme for all Bachelor of Business (Honours) degree programmes, all Bachelor of Sciences (Honours) degree programmes at the School of Computing and Informatics (SCI), School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics (SASM), School of Design (SDe) and Centre for Communication, Teaching and Learning (CCTL). This is part of our effort to make our graduates more competitive in the job market. I hope you will choose UTB and it is definitely the BEST university to embark on your academic journey that will define your future career.
The COVID-19 outbreak surely had an impact on the university but it also created rooms for opportunities for the university to grow its resilience when faced with a crisis. I believe that UTB is ready to welcome students and offer creative ways of learning amid the New Normal.
Lastly, I would like to emphasise that producing marketable graduates is still the most important agenda of our university. Our curriculum has to remain dynamic, strategic and at par with world’s best practices in order to meet the demands of global job market. While at UTB, they will be able to develop a range of attributes and skills for life and work. Insya’Allah, our graduates will become integral part of our nation’s growth and development.
Stay safe everyone, thank you.
Wabillahi Taufik Wahidayah Wassalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
