Brunei, 27 March 2021 – The Huawei ICT Academy Lab was officially opened at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) campus by the Guest of Honour, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Minister of Education.

The Guest of Honour also presented certificates to the 2021 cohort of the Huawei ICT Academy for completing the Huawei Certified ICT Associate – Routing & Switching (HCIA – R&S).

Also in attendance at the ceremony were Yang Mulia Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Hj Mohd Salleh, Deputy Minister of Education; Her Excellency Madam Yu Hong, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam; Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education); Yang Mulia Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UTB; and Yang Mulia Dr. Chin Wei Keh, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education).

The ceremony began with the launching of Huawei ICT Academy Lab, which was officiated by the Guest of Honour. Guests were also invited to tour the newly opened ICT lab located at Phase 2 of the University’s campus.

The event proceeded with the certificate presentation ceremony which took place at University’s Lecture Theatre 2, Library Complex.

A speech by Yang Mulia Mr Zhang Jianwei, Chief Executive Officer of Huawei Technologies (B) Sdn Bhd was delivered at the event followed by welcoming remarks by Yang Mulia Professor Dr Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UTB.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman then presented the certificates to 42 recipients of the Huawei Certified ICT Associate – Routing & Switching (HCIA – R&S). The recipients comprised of this year’s February and March participants. The trainers were also presented with appreciation certificate at the event.

The first course of the Huawei ICT Academy commenced on 20 February 2021 at UTB to provide participants with the knowledge of computer networking concepts using Huawei’s enterprise networking equipment and products to prepare them for an examination which led to being certified as a Huawei Certified ICT Associate – Routing and Switching (HCIA-R&S).

Throughout the course, participants studied how computer networks are designed and structured to be able to provide networking services. They also learnt more about network security and how to ensure that the networks remain resilient and adaptable to changes.

Participants who have completed the course are able to set up and manage small to medium-sized networks which utilises Huawei’s networking devices. They will then undergo certification examination, that will help them learn more complex concepts of networking.

Huawei Authorized Information and Network Academy (HAINA) is a partnership program that authorizes universities and colleges to deliver Huawei Certification courses to participating students. The students who graduate from the HAINA program are encouraged to attain Huawei Certification that will enable them to embark on career in the ICT industry. Since 2015, Huawei has partnered with more than 600 international universities to set up Huawei ICT academies, helping the universities improve their ICT teaching abilities and train more than 1,500 students.

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) and Huawei Technologies (B) Sendirian Berhad joined forces to establish a Huawei ICT Academy Lab at the university to cultivate ICT talents among the students to prepare them for future-ready ICT developments. UTB is the first university in the Sultanate to become a part of the Huawei ICT Academy that has a global presence in 72 countries.
