Category 3Creating New or Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology by Young Inventors.


Category 1 covers the invention of a new product, process or technology that did not exist previously.

Category 2 covers a new modification(s) of an existing product, process or technology that can improve or enhance its function or quality.

Category 3 is open to Bruneian school students ranging from the upper secondary to pre-university levels or equivalent to Year 10 to Year 13 by 1st February 2021. This category covers the invention of a new product, process or technology as well as modification(s) to any existing product, process or technology, that can improve or enhance its functionality or quality.


Rules and Regulations

  1. The entry and proposal forms can be found on the website http://www.utb.edu.bn/cipta

  2. The innovation/product submitted for Categories 1, 2 and 3 must be in the form of hardware or a combination of hardware and software. Software-only products are not acceptable.

  3. Categories are open to all Bruneian residents with a valid Brunei identity card.

  4. For Category 3, the participant(s) must still be enrolled in the Bruneian school with levels ranging from the upper secondary to pre-university or equivalent to Year 10 to Year 13 by 1st February 2021.

  5. A participant can join the competition as an individual or as a member of a team. Each team can have a maximum of three members only (including the team leader). No changes of team members are allowed after the submission deadline.

  6. A participant is only allowed to be in one entry per category that he/she is eligible for.

  7. For Category 3, each entry must be supervised by a teacher and be nominated and endorsed by the participant’s institution. Each participant can be involved in one entry only.

  8. For the individual entry, the participant must be a yellow/purple identity card holder.

  9. For the team entry, there must be at least one yellow/purple identity card holder within the team.

  10. The entry fees for these categories are:
    • BND 80.00 for Categories 1 and 2; and
    • BND 40.00 for Category 3.

  11. The fee is non-refundable and can be paid in either:
    a) cash, cheque (payable to Universiti Teknologi Brunei), debit/credit cards, or
    b) bank account transfer,


    *Upon submitting: the entry form, proposal form and scanned copies of the photographic identification pages of the identitiy cards / passports of all participants.

  12. Once the bank transfer has been made, the copy of slip or bank advice must be submitted and uploaded together with the other related documents.

  13. For Category 3, the Approval and Endorsement section of the entry form must be filled in by the Supervisor, accordingly.

  14. For ALL Categories, the Declaration section of the entry form must be electronically signed, accordingly. Incomplete or late entries will not be accepted.

  15. Each entry needs to provide a preliminary description of the innovation/product in the Proposal form. Further instructions can be found in the form. It can be written either in Malay or English language. The final innovation/product submitted for the judging phase must not be significantly different from the preliminary description. .

  16. The entries will be reviewed and participants of shortlisted entries will be notified.

  17. Participants of shortlisted entries will be required to produce a final report that provides a detailed description of the innovation/product. Further instructions will be provided accordingly.

  18. The innovation/product must be original and has not been published, submitted to other competitions or copied from other sources. Many past entries have been disqualified as a result of having been entered into other competitions and the participants are hereby informed of this.

  19. Before the judging day, the innovation/product has to be set-up and displayed for judges inspection, either in prototype form or by other appropriate means if the former is not feasible, at UTB, Brunei Darussalam.

  20. During the judging day, participants have to deliver a presentation on the innovation/product for the purpose of evaluations at UTB, Brunei Darussalam.

  21. Participants need to make their own arrangements to come in person to set-up and present their innovations/products at UTB, Brunei Darussalam. UTB, as the organiser, will not be providing any support in presenting their innovations/products except for basic equipment like a projector and a computer.

  22. All decisions of UTB (including those of the short-listing and judging panels) are final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Assessment and Criteria for Judging the Projects

Suitable judges for the assessment and evaluation of the work will be identified and appointed by the organising committee. The rules and guidelines for judging the work will also be prepared by the organising committee.

The assessment of the entries will be conducted in two stages:


Stage 1:Preliminary Assessment

All entries will undergo a preliminary assessment. Only qualified entries will be allowed to proceed into the stage 2 of the competition.
Stage 2:Final Assessment

Teams and individuals of the selected projects will have to present and exhibit or make arrangements to be assessed by the judges for their final assessments. The winners of Categories 1 and 2 may be nominated for the Crown Prince Special Award and will compete against nominee from the ASEAN New Invention & Innovation Category.


The criteria for judging the projects may include the following:

1. Novelty and creativity.
2. Deployment of end product
3. Relevance to the theme.
4. Social, Economic and Sustainable design considerations.
5. Report and Presentation of project.

Category 2: Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology

3rd Prize - B$ 2 000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate
Two Consolation Prizes - B$ 500.00 cash and certificate

Category 3 : Creating New or Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology by Young Inventors

1st Prize - B$ 3 000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate
2nd Prize - B$ 2 000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate
3rd Prize - B$ 1 000.00 cash, a trophy & certificate
Two Consolation Prizes - B$ 250.00 cash and certificate

All participants will be issued with participation certificates.

Special Award - The Crown Prince CIPTA Award

Winners from categories 1 and 2 will be eligible to compete with the winner from the ASEAN competition - New Invention & Innovation Category for the Crown Prince Special Award to win the grand prize of B$8000 and Trophy.
