The Mechanical Engineering Programme Area was established in 1996 and started offering BDTVEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering to meet the needs of the industry for highly skilled workforce. In 2008, the Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Mechanical Engineering programme was introduced to produce graduate engineers aligned with the needs of the nation. Over the years, the BEng in Mechanical Engineering programme has been refined to its current version to be aligned for accreditation by professional institution. The Programme Area also introduced Master of Science (MSc) in Mechanical Engineering in 2016. This provides opportunity for graduate mechanical engineers to go for further learning in Brunei. As of 2015, our level 5 diploma (HND and FD) programmes was discontinued as we focus to provide high quality education at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering (E107)
- Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (E201)
Mechanical engineering centres on creating technologies to meet human needs. It involves design of products, their manufacturing and management, and maintenance of industrial plants. It is considered as core engineering field which diversifies the vision and scope of engineers. The devices designed can range from Nano-scale to as large as power plants. Mechanical engineering education is versatile as it is targeted for innovations. These programmes are therefore designed with these core values and it also furthers the education base of graduates by enabling them to contribute towards research and development in mechanical and related fields like, aerospace, manufacturing and industrial engineering.
Careers and Further Studies
Career opportunities are available in a wide range of organizations such as in public works, consulting and construction companies, power plants, manufacturing industries. Furthermore, graduates are equipped with fundamental problem-solving and numeracy skills which enable them to adapt to the challenges of working in many industries as well as in research and development. In Brunei Darussalam, Mechanical Engineers are needed in various government institutions such as Public Works Department, Royal Brunei Airline, Royal Armed Forces, oil and gas industries such as Brunei Shell Petroleum, Brunei Petroleum, Brunei LNG and various other industries in the public and private sector.
